Gardening In Paradise – Growing Fruits And Vegetables In Hawaii

Can you think of a place in the United States where it’s possible to harvest mangoes, pineapples, papayas, citrus, avocados, and bananas near the ocean throughout the year and to be able to enjoy strawberries, plums, apples and peaches in the mountain region whenever you’d like?

The only place that comes to mind is Hawaii. Hawaiian gardens are different than just about any other gardens in any other place in the world. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, orchids and jacarandas grow in abundance. The Hawaiian air is sweetened by gardenias, night-blooming jasmine and ginger. And annuals such as petunias, begonias, impatiens, zinnias, salvia, and marigolds splash color in the gardens.

Plants that are coddled in most mainland homes seem to grow like weeds in the Hawaiian isles. Orchids, palms, and philodendrons grow with abandon in the wilds – as well as in the yards of many homes. And they’re often accompanied by croton and ti, and other exotic species.

Many plants came to the Hawaiian Islands via the Polynesians, migrating birds, and ocean currents. However most arrived years ago when plant enthusiasts migrated to the islands from Europe, the Orient, and the Americas.

Some species of plants found the soil so nutritious that they seemed to go wild. Some examples include macadamia, coffee, coconuts, guava, avocados, mangos, and kukui. Anyone who wants to plant a garden has a huge array of plants to choose from – whether they want to landscape their community, business, or their home.

When choosing plants, though, the Hawaiian gardener has to take into account where they are going to have their garden. They need to know about the requirements and growth habits of the plants that they would like to grow.

One consideration is the elevation of the garden spot because of the way temperature is affected by elevation. Although temperatures rarely go below fifty degrees or higher than ninety degrees, some plants favor a specific temperature range.

Also, if the garden is located in a spot that is higher than an 8,000 foot elevation, then there could be frost almost any night throughout the year.

Another consideration is the type of soil the plants thrive in. In the islands the soil varies from being deeply acidic volcanic soil to being highly alkaline beach sand.

Richer soils also make it possible to grow the best vegetables and flowers in the world. People who live in Hawaii can pick a basket full of tomatoes, a dozen long stem roses, or a fresh green salad, no matter if it’s November or it is June.

One thing that many people in Hawaii as well as the mainland have in common is that they love to furnish their gardens with beautiful furniture.

Growing fruit and vegetables in your greenhouse

Edit Article |

Adding a greenhouse to your garden will give you the chance to grow your favourite plants all year round, including a variety of fruit and vegetables. Tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cucumbers and aubergines are just a few of the many types of fruit and vegetables that you can grow in your greenhouse.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables gives you the chance to enjoy a wide variety of food and can be particularly beneficial to those who opt to grow their fruit and vegetables organically. Organic fruit and vegetables provide a wide variety of health benefits. You can also keep your fruit and vegetables healthy by using organic methods of pest removal in order to avoid harmful chemicals.

In order to successfully grow your own fruit and vegetables, it is important to be aware of what your plants need. Be sure to add plenty of ventilation to your greenhouse and install extra heating if you think your plants need it. If you are a beginner, then you may wish to invest in a set of cold frames, which are ideal for tomatoes and easy to use. Cold frames come with a hinged lid, making it easy for you to care for your plants.

In addition to fruit and vegetables, you can also grow a variety of herbs in your greenhouse, which is ideal for those who love home cooking. Growing your own fruit, vegetables and herbs will provide you with a variety of fresh ingredients that you, your friends and family can enjoy all year round.

When growing your own fruit and vegetables, it is important to ensure that you provide them with enough care and attention. They will need to be watered regularly and provided with plenty of ventilation during summer. Be sure to research the needs of your plants before you start growing them. You will also need to make sure that you keep your fruit and vegetables safe from pests. Pests can be removed by blasts of water or sticky traps, which are a great alternative to pest removal sprays that contain harmful chemicals.

Growing Fruits and Vegetables in Containers

Edit Article |

Posted: Aug 10, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

Growing fruits and vegetables in containers provides a unique challenge, it can be hard to make sure they have plenty of water. Fortunately it’s not hard to work around this, just use commercially made pots with a reservoir or make your own.

Fruits and vegetables in containers.

Trying to grow most fruits and vegetables in a standard pot with drainage holes in the bottom can be very time consuming. In the heat of summer they often need to be watered several times a day, otherwise you’ll get a lower yield, you might not even get a crop if you just miss a couple days watering.

One way around the problem of having to water so often is to buy commercial pots with a reservoir, often the bigger the reservoir the better. The reservoir should be able to hold several days worth of water, at the very least it should be big enough that you only have to water once a day, saving a lot of time.

Another method is to make your own pot. The simplest way that I have done this is to just take a 5-gallon bucket and drill small holes all around the pot. These holes are about an eighth to a quarter inch in diameter and are one to two inches up from the bottom, providing a one to two inch reservoir.

Now the pots should be filled with a good potting mix. I’m not going to get into the many different recipes for potting mix, which range from entirely home made to the hydroponic method of using straight perlite or rockwool. Just remember, the less nutrients in the potting mix, compost being the most common ingredient to add nutrients to a potting mix, the more fertilizer you’ll have to use in the form of water soluble or a slow release form.

Growing fruits and vegetables is quite a big subject, yet if you learn some of the basics of what plants need to grow well, you’ll be able to get a nice yield from a plant on your patio.

Growing Vegetables in the Garden

Edit Article |

Ah, the joy of growing vegetables in the garden: it’s certainly a great way to feed you and your family. But did you know that most people—including yours truly—who have vegetable gardens save, on average, around a 0 a year on vegetables? Did you know that homegrown vegetables are up to 3 times safer and a whole lot more organic than any supermarket’s selection? You do now.

Growing vegetables in the garden is one of life’s greatest small pleasures. Some use them for a steady supply of food and others use them as supplement to their existing food stock. In either case, managing a vegetable garden is fun and so rewarding. But whether you’re a newcomer to vegetable gardening or a veteran, there are a few tips that can be extremely useful.

The basics for beginners

So you’re going to be growing vegetables in the garden—great! Take a few pieces of advice from a person who’s been gardening for years.

- Make sure your soil is good, healthy-looking, nutritious soil—plants typically hate soils with a lot of sand or clay. – Gather a sample of it and take it to a gardening shop (or similar) to let them run a quick and simple pH test on it. – A good pH level is usually about 6.4. – Your vegetable garden needs to be in spot that gets the most sunlight.

Water, drainage, and general maintenance

Drainage is definitely an important point. Depending on the height of the ground, make sure the garden’s drainage system is efficient. You don’t want water to practically run right off it, but you also don’t want it to be susceptible to over-watering. Regions that get a lot more rain than others (i.e. heavy rain is pretty common to most of the U.S.’s Eastern half) can pour more water on the ground that it’s capable of quickly absorbing. The latter is all the more reason for a good drainage system.

Assuming that you get little rain while growing vegetables in garden, water your plants twice weekly—one good weekly watering is usually more than sufficient for areas that receive moderate rain. Also, during spring and summer don’t bury or even worry about foliage as this is normal and won’t hurt the crops. However, when the foliage turns brown in fall gradually clean it off.

A variety of vegetables can be grown a good portion of the year

There are many vegetables that are much easier to care for, easier to sustain over the long-term, and last seasonably longer. Bush beans are one and they’re generally pretty self-sufficient. Pole beans are easier to plant typically much more resilient against hotter temps in the summer, and just need support beams to grow. With most vegetables, however, it’s ideal to plant and start growing in spring. Make sure that the possibility of Old Man Winter (in the form of frost usually) is long gone, though. The last thing you want is to wake up to a completely spoiled vegetable garden because you planted too early.

Other plants that are typically simple to moderately easy to sustain include the venerable tomato, legumes like lettuce, peppers, zucchini squash, and good ‘ole ordinary squash. But whichever crops you plan to grow, it’s important to do at least a little plant-specific research. Some more than others have specific requirements.

Easy to Grow Vegetables – Revealing Top 5 List of Easy to Grow Vegetables Plus The Most Top-Notch Organic Gardening Method

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 05, 2010 |

Want to know some of the most easy to grow vegetables? Tell you what; I’m going to give you the top 5 list of easy to grow vegetables PLUS…

I’ll also reveal the most top-notch organic gardening method. Now, I say this method is “top-notch” because if you apply it to your organic vegetable garden, you’ll get some highly positive and highly terrific results…

Listen, I’ll tell you about the method in just a bit. For now, let me give you the top 5 list of vegetables that are very easy to grow.

Note: Images and video introduction regarding this top-notch gardening method can be viewed by clicking on this link.

(1) Tomatoes

It’s not difficult to grow tomatoes. I sow the seeds in soil that’s fertile and very moist. In order to get constant supply of fresh organic tomatoes, I always make sure to sow the seeds about several weeks apart.

(2) Potatoes

Now, I love growing potatoes! What I like most about growing them is that they do not require a lot space. In fact, you can grow them in bins.

(3) Green Peas

Stalking is necessary if you want to grow them. After all, they grow on vines. You know, you can actually quicken the germination process, by soaking the seeds for about 2 hours so. After soaking, you can go ahead and sow them.

(4) Spinach

Popeye’s favorite food can be grown easily. You can start with a handful of seeds and to get constant supply, simply sow the seeds in regular sequence every month.

(5) Onion

Unlike tomatoes or spinach, onion seedlings have to be planted instead of sown. I used to dislike growing organic onions because weed management is such a pain.

But thanks to the top-notch gardening method which I’m about to share, my organic garden where I grow onions and various other vegetables does not need weed management at all!

Let me tell you, it’s so easy to grow vegetables using this method. It’s almost hassle-free!

Maybe you’ve heard of this top-notch organic gardening method. It’s called ecological gardening and it’s very simple to set up. The idea behind ecological gardening is to set up a vegetable garden that imitates natural habitat.

This way, you don’t have to worry about digging, managing weeds, crop rotation, tillage and more. Pests are also repelled naturally. Yes, you don’t have to use chemicals and pesticides on an ecological organic garden.

In addition to those benefits, ecological gardening actually produces more fresh organic fruits and vegetables compared to traditional gardening!

By the way, you can learn to set up an ecological garden within a few hours. It’s very easy to grow vegetables using the ecological gardening formula. Step-by-step videos on how to do it are available and very simple to follow along.

Just the follow this link if you’re interested in setting up an almost zero maintenance organic vegetable garden today: http://www.growingorganicfood.info

Grow Your Vegetables Indoors with Aquaponics

Edit Article |

Growing your own food the traditional way has always been a time consuming and a demanding task. And in order to grow a garden, you would need enough fertile land in a sunny location. Many people, if not most, just don’t have the time to be that dedicated to a garden, and many don’t have the fertile soil or space for a garden.

These are some of the reasons most people don’t grow their own food. Instead, they go to the grocery store and buy food, sometimes paying inflated prices for “organic” food. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Many people are discovering just how simple and practical it can be to grow clean organic food in their own homes. That’s right, I said inside their homes.

There is a new way of growing food that is just starting to catch on with commercial farmers and home gardeners. Aquaponics is one of the most simple ways to grow food. It will provide both vegetables and fish. All fresh and organic from the comfort of your own home, and in very little space.

For a simple aquaponics system, you will need a fish tank. Aquariums with fish are already very popular in many homes. You can grow tilapia, catfish, crappie, bluegill among many other types of fish. Or if you don’t want to eat the fish, and only want to grow vegetables, you can choose traditional decorative fish that you would find at the pet store.

Seeds for your plants can be planted in special pots that allow the roots to have access to the aquarium water. Or you can build a system that circulates the water through trays that the plants will grow in. The plants use the nutrients in the water that come from the fish wastes. At the same time, the plants clean the water, which gives the fish a healthy environment to live in.

This creates a natural environment that is similar to systems in nature. With this type of farming, you don’t need soil or land and no chemicals or fertilisers. This will produce truly organic vegetables and fish that are far more fresh than anything you would get from a grocery store.

This type of gardening has many advantages over traditional soil gardening. No tilling, weeding, pesticides, gophers, dirty hands and clothes or any of that to deal with. It is a clean way to grow plants in your home. No mold and spores, makes this cleaner for indoors than growing potted house plants, and fish have already been proven to be clean house pets.

This type of system is also great for a greenhouse. If you can expand into a greenhouse or outdoors, when weather is favorable, you can expand your aquaponic garden as much as you want.

Learn how to start your own aquaponics garden with this aquaponics how to guide. It will teach you step by step how to build the system and how to maintain it so it will provide food for a long time.

Aquaponics is a type of agriculture that is just starting to catch the attention of many commercial and home gardeners and aquaculturists. Grow only those vegetables that you like eating. It will be pointless to grow veggies that you don’t like, unless you are doing so for business purposes. Thus, it is very important to make a list of all the vegetables you plan to grow. List them by family. Knowing the vegetable families will help in planning rotations. It will be perfect to give priority to those valued for incredible flavor when eaten fresh from the garden, such as, sweet corn, beans and peas, tomatoes and young spinach to mention a few.

When getting started, of course, you will also need to plan your garden carefully in order to save yourself a lot of trouble in the future. Begin by considering the site of the garden. When choosing a place for the garden, you need to choose according to what your plants will need and not by appearance. You have to make it a point that it is situated where your plants can receive direct sunlight for at least six hours everyday. The sun warms the air and the soil as well.

Water is another necessity for plants and it is especially important at transplanting time or when a plant is on the process of making fruit, so make sure that you place your garden near a water source.

In organic gardening  vegetable, soil type is also a very important factor. You need to make it a point that the soil is very good for gardening. You can enhance the quality of the soil by adding organic matter, lime and nutrients. Choose a place for your garden with soil that is well drained and rich in organic matter.

Home organic gardening has become increasingly popular day by day. Many of us already practice forms of organic gardening. You need the full and proper information about the gardening before starts your home organic gardening. Organic gardening is the practice of growing vegetables, herbs and fruits using only things found in nature. You may be the organic gardening newbie or an experienced gardener, Organic Gardening Information will provide you with the latest, time-tested information on Organic Gardening.  Information you can use right away to grow your own vegetables in a way that is safe for you, your family and the environment. Organic Gardening means to grow fruits, vegetables and other plants without relying on synthetic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or fertilizers. You can have the really fresh vegetables and salad in your kitchen; you just need to give some time in your kitchen. Organic Gardening is the use of natural compost and manure to fertilize and grow plants and flowers. No harmful chemicals or pesticides are used to protect the plants. As opposed to Gardening that uses pesticides and other chemicals, Organic Gardening is truly natural and no harmful effect. This is the really the safest and easy way to have the fresh vegetables in your kitchen.

The soil of your garden really effects your vegetable growth. The soil is a biologically active and dynamic resource, providing plants with mineral nutrients, water and oxygen. Organic gardening — living organisms, fresh residues and decomposed residues is an essential ingredient in fertile and healthy soils. Organic gardening fertilizer improves soil tilt while preventing soil compaction and crusting. Soils low in organic matter often crust or seal over after a heavy rain, which prevents water and oxygen infiltration to the root system of growing vegetables. Animal manures is the best source for the organic gardening and for the grow of your plants. Animal manures are an excellent source of organic matter and nutrients for the soil. Ideally, manure should be composted according to NOP’s composting standard. Composting manure stabilizes the nitrogen and reduces the viability of weed seeds and disease pathogens that may be in the manure. Organic gardening composted manures can be use any time.

Grow Closets Provide The Perfect Environment For Growing Fruits, Vegetables And Flowers

Edit Article |

If you have less than ideal growing conditions at your home or apartment for growing your favorite plants, and who does not as we are going into the colder winter months, you can still grow fantastic fruits, vegetables and flowers easily, by growing them indoors in a growing closet.  A grow closet, which is also known as a grow tent, basically gives you ideal indoor growing conditions for all types of plants.  Now you are no longer tied to the calendar or the outdoor thermometer when it comes to planting and growing your favorite plants, because you control all of the environmental factors yourself in grow closets, and thus you can make sure that conditions are right for any type of plants that you wish to grow.

A grow tent system consists of a durable outer material that is held in place by steel structural supports, much as a tent is that you would use for camping.  Inside the grow closets, you can have your choice of a growing system that uses soil, or a soilless growing system, known as a  hydroponic gardening system.  The growing closet will usually have some type of exhaust and venting system in place, in order to keep the air circulating and to remove any odors.  Shelves may be in place and a lighting system, which can incorporate high-intensity discharge grow lights or LED lights.  You then place your choice of fruit, vegetable or flowering plants into the growing system, and begin feeding and watering them.  Zippers are used to close the outer covering of the grow closets, enclosing the space and making it so that you can completely control the air temperature inside, making it so the grow closet perfectly suits the types of plants you grow, which leads to quick results from your plants.

You might choose to grow small fruit inside your grow tent.  Perhaps strawberry shortcakes are calling to you.  You can easily grow strawberry plants inside your growing closet, and in a short time be enjoying their succulent fruit.

When summer temperatures fade away in the fall, so too do your favorite vegetables and flowers grown outdoors, but this need not be the case when you use a grow closet.  You can grow vegetables such as lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, as well as flowers such as dahlias or roses, and many others in your indoor growing closet, even during the cold months.

If you want to learn more about how a grow closet works and what your options are for different sizes of systems available, you can visit an indoor gardening supplier online.
