Organic Vegetable Gardening: Early Summer Checklist

As summer approaches it is wonderful to be able to relax and enjoy the garden, but there is also a lot to be done in the organic vegetable garden at this time of year.
Weeding
Late spring and early summer is the peak growing time for most plants, including weeds. Being natural wild plants they will grow strong healthy roots very quickly. Don’t let them get the upper hand or they will steal the precious water and nutrients that your growing vegetables need. Hoe twice a week for optimum weed control.
If you get to know your weeds, you may find that you can add some of them to your salad bowl instead of throwing them straight into the compost. For a few dollars you can buy a book of edible wild plants native to your state or country that will help you identify them. Perhaps you will even decide to let some of your tastiest weeds live and seed.
Sowing And Planting Out
Depending on your climate you may still be sowing carrots, cabbage and broccoli for later harvests. Plant out any remaining zucchini, pumpkins, squash and beans.
Plants that have been grown from seed indoors need to be hardened to the change of air and temperature before being planted outside, even if the weather is warm. Leave them outside in a sheltered spot, not in full sun, for a few days, bringing them in at night or any time that the temperature drops.
Thinning And Harvesting
Many plants will require thinning now to get the best crop. A lot of these are technically fruit but as we eat these non-sweet fruit in salads, they are usually considered part of the vegetable garden.
With tomatoes, pinch off the side shoots to encourage the plant to put more energy into its fruit. If your shoots are about 5 inches long or more, they can be established as separate plants. They will take about 10 days to root and of course will produce a later crop than the main plant. Remove their first flowers to have them grow big enough to provide good fruit.
If you are growing cucumbers, harvest them regularly to encourage more to be produced. Pick lettuce before it becomes too old and replace your first lettuces with new sown seeds.
Pest Control And Wildlife
This is a great time to encourage natural predators to settle in your garden and control your pests.
If you have problems with aphids, purchase a ladybug nest and feeder.
The beetles that feed on slugs flourish on undug, well mulched ground that gives them plenty of protective cover. So control weeds with mulch instead of the hoe if you have a slug problem.
Encourage bees and wasps by growing flowers with large, colorful open blooms or smaller, bell-shaped flowers alongside your vegetables. Wasps also love to have a pile of undisturbed dead wood for nest building. By providing this for them in a place that you choose, you can prevent them from nesting around the house, tool stores, children’s play areas and other areas of your organic vegetable garden.

Keep your garden blooming all summer long using some simple, but essential techniques.
Plants exist to make seed. The flowers that they produce are simply a flag waving exercise to encourage pollinators to visit their nectaries and in the process pollinate the flowers and enable the plant to make seed. Once a plant has seed maturing in its ovaries it stops producing flowers and diverts all its energy into the maturing seeds. That means if you want your plants to keep on flowering and to direct their energy into flowers, foliage and new growth, you need to remove the dead flowers and prevent the plant from making seed. This is called deadheading and is simply the removal of the whole flower including the developing seed capsule or pod at the base of the flower. For some plants like flowering shrubs, deadheading mostly just tidies up the plant, although some such as roses may have a second later flush of flowers. But for other plants such as bedding plants, patio plants and many fruit and vegetables, the more you remove the dead flowers, or pick the produce in the case of vegetables, the more productive the plant becomes. This is especially important with plants such as runner beans, peas, mange tout, sweet peas, tomatoes, courgettes and summer basket plants. It also keeps the garden neater and tidier.
Feeding
Keep your border plants blooming with quality feeding. Even though you may have used a long-term fertiliser, you can still give your plants a boost by adding a liquid feed to the watering can when you water.
Pay attention to any plants growing in containers, they will quickly use up the fertiliser held in the compost. For the best results you need to feed them regularly throughout the growing season. Don’t forget to feed any potted shrubs, trees and perennials. Top dress the compost surface with fresh compost and use slow or controlled release plant food tablets. Keep the pots well watered.
If your plants are starving and showing signs of stress you can apply a foliar feed to their leaves on evening. This is quickly taken up into the plants and will give them a much-needed boost. It’s also important to identify the cause of the stress, usually it is related to the watering, if the compost dries out too quickly then your plant cannot get enough water to support its leaves or to grow. You may need to consider repotting your plant. Devise a watering system that supplies your plant with the right amount of water. This may mean standing it in a water tray while the weather is hot.
Watering
Keep an eye on any new plants in the garden and be sure to water them if the weather is dry. They need time to establish a good root system before they can fend for themselves in a dry spell.
Plants in containers are among the first to suffer in hot sunny water, as they are dependent on the gardener for water when it doesn’t rain.
Drying winds will quickly desiccate the compost and hot weather can scorch plants that have no shade. Move exposed baskets to a more sheltered position. Make sure they are thoroughly watered. Bring them down off their brackets in the evening. Stand them on buckets and give them a really thorough soaking until the compost is saturated. Water pots, planters and baskets at dusk, and make sure that the compost is thoroughly soaked. If the weather is intense, consider moving the planters into the shade so that the plants do not suffer. Group planters, pots and baskets together to make it easier to water them, especially when you have to use a watering can during a hose pipe ban.

Most people spend a great deal of time and effort planning their summer gardens. Whether you are planning a summer garden that is designed to awe and amaze all those who manage to capture a glimpse or simply trying to construct a summer garden that will inspire you when you manage to take a moment and glance around, taking in the fruits of your labor there is no reason you should skimp on the planning stage as it may prove detrimental to the overall effect. If you are looking for ways to make your summer garden sizzle the absolute best way is to give it the careful planning and attention to detail it deserves.
First and foremost you need to plan more than the plants that will go in your summer garden. Whether you are planting flowers, trees, shrubs, greenery, fruits, or vegetables you need still need to plan the boundaries, bordering, landscaping, and layout of your summer garden. You should also consider the accents in your lawn and garden area that will showcase certain aspects of your summer garden while diminishing the effects of less attractive features of your summer garden or the natural landscape of your lawn.
Arrange your summer garden in a manner that is attractive. Whether you are using traditional rows for a vegetable garden or raised landscaping boxes in select areas along the exterior of your home there are plenty of opportunities to present your summer garden in as attractive of a manner as possible. Take great time and care that you do just that when planning your garden. You want your summer garden to be a place to show off to friends and neighbors. Arranging it attractively so that it doesn’t detract from the remainder of your landscaping efforts is a wise move-even if your summer garden is intended to be merely functional as a vegetable garden.
Use lawn furniture, birdhouses, water features, and other clever landscaping tips and tricks in order to provide additional focal points throughout your summer garden area. Provide plenty of distractions so that visitors may see something different every time they stop by. Be careful that you do not make your summer garden seem gaudy or overcrowded though. There is a fine balance between having too many gaps in scenery and overloading the senses. Take care that you do not cross that line.
Use lighting so that your summer garden may be enjoyed even when dusk is imminent. There are many ways this can be accomplished. I recommend using solar powered lighting along pathways and walkways within your summer garden and overhead lighting in common areas where there is seating and that are meant for congregating and socializing.
Create pathways within your gardens and mark them with pavers and stones. These pathways provide visitors a walking path through your garden area and keep feet from compacting the soil and inhibiting the growth in your garden. This is also a great method for keeping your garden attractive in appearance and from looking overgrown in areas that aren’t readily accessible for mowing.
Install a water feature such as a goldfish pond or waterfall for a little dramatic flare. These are not only beautiful but allow the opportunity for a social area and a little more lighting in your garden area. If you enjoy birds, it also gives the water a little room in which to flit and flitter to the delight of young and older kids alike. For a really sizzling summer garden it needs to be a garden that people want to enjoy and where they wish to congregate. Little touches such as those mentioned above make a huge difference to visitors and increase the enjoyment of summer gardens exponentially.
Plan your summer garden to attract visitors and keep their attention and you should have no shortage of flattering comments about your green thumb or your gardening efforts. Remember to keep the plants looking healthy and beautiful though of you may find the opposite of the desired effect is the case.
