Indoor Roses, Rose Gardening Simplified

Growing roses can be a difficult and time consuming process. They need a lot of special care and attention to stay healthy and keep growing those beautiful blooms that are so highly prized. With all of the pruning and cutting that must go into outdoor roses, many people are turning to indoor roses as an easier option.

Many different types of roses can be grown indoors as well as outdoors but because of the size of most rose bushes, most experts recommend using miniature roses for growing indoors. These roses are not only smaller, making them easier to maintain, but they also require less care and attention than most other types.

The ease of caring for your indoor roses depends directly on you and what kind of rose you choose.

Some types of miniature roses need very little care beyond the normal watering and sunlight although they do need occasional fertilizing with a weak solution of rose fertilizer. Other types require more effort, going through blooming and dormant seasons and needing to be fertilized, watered, and pruned often. Either way, the roses inside will be easier to care for than your outdoor roses simply because of the convenient location.

Another reason growing roses indoors is easier is because of pests.

You do not have all of the harmful insects inside your house that can potentially live in your garden, therefore the risk of infection in your roses is less, as is the risk of them being eaten by little plant loving bugs.

Pruning often puts outdoor roses at risk of infection and disease but since your indoor roses will have little or no pruning done to them, the risk to them from this is also greatly reduced.

A large part of the problem many people have with outdoor roses is the amount of pruning and precision that is required. Outdoor rose bushes must be pruned just right and shaped in order to keep their gorgeous look.

If you use miniatures for your indoor roses, you don’t have to worry about how you prune them.

Simply cut off the old blooms, and when they go dormant, usually in December, simply cut the entire plant back to about three inches. They naturally grow out well-shaped and beautiful with minimal help or attention. Cut off any dead blooms and soon you should see new growth and more flowers.

Growing roses indoors can be difficult; but, if you are unsure of what you’re doing, it is easy to find others who have had success and can give you tips and advice to get your green thumb in gear. Compared to outdoor roses, indoor roses are easier to care for and to keep beautiful, not to mention the longer blooming season, giving you more beautiful blooms to brighten your day.

Growing miniature roses may seem daunting .

Though at first one might think that these are fragile plants, what with their being miniature and all, whereas it’s the other way around as they’re one of the hardier plants of the rose variety.

Inside Scoop For Planting A Rose Garden

Edit Article |

The beautiful flowers are the main reason for planting a rose garden. Roses have been popular throughout the ages. The Empress Josephine, following the French Revolution, was so impressed with roses she went about collecting every known type of rose for her garden and made gardening the “thing to do” for generations of gardeners.

Currently, there are many varieties of roses, some that are descendants of the early roses. Besides the many varieties available there are other characteristics that attract people to roses. They come in all colors, form, fragrance and substance. Some bloom once while others bloom all through the season. This is the reason why gardeners find roses so appealing and want to incorporate them in their rose gardens.

The beauty is in all parts of the flower, but it is the petals that most people consider perfection in a rose. The elements that make up this perfection include their color, fragrance, substance and arrangement. Petal formation comes in three groups: Single form with 5 petals, Semi-double with 2 to 3 rows of 12 to 16 petals, and Double form with 17 and up to 40 or more petals.

While on the topic of petal formations, let’s take it a bit more in detail and consider the arrangement of the petals. Multi-petaled roses with large or formal shape are frequently labeled exhibition roses. They have gracefully formed petals that are symmetrically arranged with a high pointed center. The petal arrangement as they begin to bloom is judged on symmetry as well as the spacing of the gaps. Each variety of rose has its own unique characteristics but each exhibition rose is at its perfect stage of bloom when it is between half and three-quarters of the way open.

Roses are also judged by their colors. Some of the elements that contribute to its color are brightness, hue, and chroma. Brightness refers to how clear and vivid the blooms are. Hue includes the visual impact of the petals and how that color varies from other colors. Chroma is the intensity and purity of the hue with no gray or white in its hue. The ideal petal of substance is an amazing blend of brightness and chroma.

The reasons are obvious many gardeners choose roses for more than their fragrance, but it sure is nice to be able to enjoy their fragrance as an added benefit. Many of the most beautiful roses have little or no fragrance but they have beautiful showy flowers. About 20 percent of roses have an intense fragrance so keep an open mind when shopping. If you only want roses that have a wonderful fragrance you may miss out on some of the exceptional varieties available. The fragrance may be relationship between fragrance and the other characteristics of the rose. Darker roses are more fragrant than lighter ones. Those with lots of petals have a stronger more intense scent than those with fewer petals. Reds and pinks are closely related with the classic rose scent. The scent of white and yellow roses is similar in to that of orrisroot, violets and other flowery and fruity scents. The ‘Crimson Glory’ and ‘Chrysler Imperial,’ both red hybrid tea roses, have won awards for their fragrance as well as the other characteristics.

Armed with these top reasons for planting a rose garden, you will look upon your garden and selection of specimens for your garden in a new light. For the most enjoyment include a variety of fragrant and non-fragrant plants.

Roses have gotten a bad wrap over the years for being difficult to grow and maintain.  If you are thinking of rose gardening don’t let this rumor stop you.  While rose gardening can prove to be challenging, once you get the hang of it, it really isn’t that bad.

When you first start rose gardening, you will have to choose what type of rose you wish to plant, and no, I’m not talking about the color.  You will have to choose between bare-root, pre-packaged, and container-grown roses.  Bare-root roses are sold in the winter and early spring.  They should be planted as soon as frosts are over and the ground is warm and workable.  Pre-packaged roses are bare-root plants that are sold in a bad or box with something around the roots to retain moisture, such as sawdust.  Container-grown roses are grown; you guessed it, in containers.  They will be either budding or already in bloom when they become available in the early spring.

Planting in rose gardening is not that much different than any other type of plant.  The most important thing, as always, is good, healthy soil and a prime planting area.  It doesn’t matter whether your roses are bare-root or container-grown, the planting methods are the same as any other shrub.  Make sure the spot you choose has good drainage, gets plenty of sunlight, and will not overcrowd your roses.  Before planting, any dead leaves and thin or decayed shoots need to be cut off.  Any damaged or very long roots also need to be trimmed.  Soak bare-root roses in water about 10-12 hours to restore moisture in the roots before planting and water the soil before planting as well.  Make sure the hole you have dug is large enough for the root growth of the rose.  Also it is a good idea to use compost or mulch.  After all, roses like extra nutrients just like any other plant.

Roses need the same things as other plants; they are just a bit needier.  One of the most important things to remember in rose gardening is that roses are heavy feeders and will need several fertilizer applications.  Fertilizing should be started in early spring and discontinued in early fall.  Make sure not to over-fertilize (fertilize should come with instructions) and water after each feeding.  Roses require large amounts of water; a thorough watering twice a week should be enough.

Pruning is an essential part to flower gardening.  It increases blooms and encourages healthy plant growth.  Different varieties of roses have different instructions for pruning, so you might want to read up on your rose types and see what is suggested.

The main thing to remember in rose gardening is to water, water, and water some more.  One other thing about rose gardening is the amount of fertilizer and nutrients you will need to use, and the pruning that needs to be done to keep your roses under control and healthy.  Even though rose gardening takes a little more time and roses are more work, they are one of the most unique and beautiful plants, and definitely worth the extra work.

The Beautiful Rose And You Garden

Edit Article |

Roses would have to be one of the most popular, beautiful and well known flower about. There are hundreds of species to choose from, all with individual scent, bloom and colours, and all as stunning as each other.

The rose is often assocaited with love, receiving a dozen red roses on valentines day would be enough to make anyone’s heart sing. The rose scent alone can stimulate the senses. Bringing about past memories, occasions and many emotions, such as love and happiness.  Growing roses can be very easy, and with so many varieties to choose from you will never be stuck for colour combinations, size and structure in your garden.

Plan your garden first, you may wish to draw it on paper, or just visulise it in your minds eye. Ensure you have the measurements of plants full growth, how many you can fit into the space you have. Don’t just plant anywhere, having structure and measuring out before planting will not only ensure a beautiful garden, but a well planned one.

If you are buying from your local garden centre consider the age of the rose, it takes about two years for a rose to mature. If buying a one year old plant, consider it is still quite young and may have unforseen problems. Older plants will of course be more expensive but worth the extra cost. Choosing a quality plant that will also give an instant effect to your garden is worth a few extra pennies.

Before planting your roses, you also need to ensure the land is ready and at its best to accept your prize rose. Make sure the soil is of quality. Add compost, to your soil and water before planting.

Follow the planting insructions for your specific rose. Generally digging a hole big enough for root base, ensuring not to cover any foliage, and adding water to hole before placing rose in. Once planted banana skins scattered at the base of the plant are great as they are rich in potassium and the earth will absorb these nutrients.

Feed your plants at least twice a year with fertilizer, and slow release foods etc, and of course remember to water. Your plants depending on age will require prunning usually only once a year. And dead heading is done to remove any old blooms, therefore giving the plant the opportunity to direct its energy into the new blooms.

Roses as mentioned earlier will give you great pleasure, nothing like walking around your garden on a summers day admiring your roses bobbing in the sun and smelling delicious.

Enjoy!!!

Everything About Rose Bush Care

You’d be hard pressed to find a gardener who has included rose bushes in their floral repertoire and didn’t walk away thrilled with the return on investment received for their efforts .

Few garden icons compare to the rose in charm and richness. Grown for thousands of years in almost every corner of the inhabited world, roses have long been considered a symbol of elegance. With some basic knowledge of rose bush care, even beginning gardeners can reap the benefits that all successful rose growers have come to know.

Whether you’ve inherited your rose bushes by moving into a home with an existing garden, or have just planted your first variety, understanding proper rose bush care is simple and rewarding.

There are so many different varieties of rose bushes, your biggest obstacle may be choosing which one is best for your yard. Color, size, shape, you name it, and you’ll find a rose to fit it – and you’ll probably really enjoy yourself in the process.

Roses fare best when they’re planted in good soil, in a sunny spot where they are assured of getting at least six hours of direct sunlight every day.  Those varieties of rose bushes that are said to do well in shade still need four to six hours of direct sunlight daily.

Deep watering, about one inch per week, is critical in keeping your rose bushes healthy. The root systems of roses grow deep, and so must the water you give them. Surface watering will not do any good, since there is no way for the roots to extract water at ground level.

Rose bushes are vulnerable to many different kinds of damaging insects like mites, caterpillars, Japanese beetles, and aphids to name just a few. There are several options available to gardeners when it comes to pest control, and the more you learn about each method, the better equipped you will be to handle it with ease.

First, identify the invader. If there is one or two wandering the plant, pick them off with your fingers. There is a chance that eggs have been laid on the plant’s leaves, so remove the leaf on which you saw the insect to be safe. You can choose between man-made and organic pest control methods, but it makes sense to learn what you can about both options before making a choice.

Be hyper-vigilant when reading over the labels of any pest control chemical you purchase, since even some organic remedies can be toxic to people, pets and local wildlife. Carefully follow the package directions whenever using these types of chemicals. Most experienced rose bush growers believe that infestations can be remedied naturally without any chemicals at all. The pests that attack your roses have their own enemies in nature. Ladybugs, for instance, eat many of the insects that plague roses.  Frogs, lizards, snakes, even certain species of wasps are nature’s way of keeping harmful pests off of your rose bushes.

Deadheading, or pruning, is another important part of rose bush care. Deadheading your blooms after they fade makes room for a new bud to flower, which will keep your rose bushes vibrant all through the season. Pruning also rids your rose bushes of dead twigs and other garbage vegetation that will only stunt your rose bush’s flowering and growth.

Rose Gardening- Frequently Asked Questions

Edit Article |

There are many rose gardening questions that people ask of professionals, many of which are preventable problems. Here are a few rose gardening questions and answers to help budding rose gardening professionals.

Why will my roses not bloom? There are a few reasons that roses do not bloom. This includes rose gardening errors such as using too much nitrogen fertilizer, a plant under a year old, it is a once blooming type of rose or the soil’s pH level is too high or low. When caring for roses, these are easy to fix. Simply know the type of roses you have in your garden as well as their age, research the growth of your roses and know how much fertilizer you are using and what the ingredients are. The only other major reason rose gardening has trouble and roses do not bloom is a lack of sunlight. Roses of all varieties require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight daily.

How much water do I need to give my roses? When transplanting roses, rose planting for the first time or potted roses, more water is needed than any other time. However, when rose gardening or simply caring for roses, a minimum of 1 inch of water weekly with the optimal amount being 2 inches during the growing season is suggested. It is suggested that water be given every 4-6 days in summer and bushes being given an average of 5 gallons per week in summer. Having deep watering from time to time is suggested rather than daily light watering so that roots are deeper run. Deeper root systems are able to survive frost and drought.

How do you deadhead a rose? When caring for roses or any type of rose gardening, deadheading is the act of cutting off the flowers as they tend to wither. Older blooms that are left on the plant can create hips, and will slow production of more blooms. Deadheading will create more blooms in a growing season. To deadhead a rose, cut away in a diagonal cut just above the next 5 leaf branch down the stem. The ideas behind this are to cut away to a bud eye that will create a healthy cane again. If this will leave too little cane behind, a 3 leaf branch can be taken away instead. During the first year, only cut away the first 3 to 5 leaf branch.

What are the black spots on my roses? In caring for roses, many rose gardening experts have seen black spot. This is a fungus that causes many black spots to form in areas from 1/16 to a half inch on the leaves and stems. These are now infected and turn yellow, then will fall off. Sometimes this fungus can cause the rose bush to become completely defoliated. Wet leaves or splashing water as well as warm temperatures can cause this condition.
