Factors Encouraging People to Grow Food

The variety of vegetables and sometimes fruits is amazing after looking at seed catalogs and all the varieties they have to offer. Produce that is grown has such better taste than that bought at the grocery store as well as unsurpassed nutrition. This is because to grow food not only saves money but also enables people to eat better, and be healthier. To grow food, following are the requirements: pots with soil or a garden area, garden tools, such as rake, hoe, rototiller, watering can, vegetable seeds, fruit trees and fertilizer. The following guidelines should be taken into consideration to grow food: Beginning byassessing gardening situation, for a large garden spot, outdoors or a small yard or just a patio, it is possible to grow food in pots; Tilling the ground, by renting or borrowing a rototiller and tilling the ground to turn the soil, going over the garden spot several times to loosen large dirt clods and finally breaking down the earth into finer soil; Preparing the soil, raking out the large dirt clods once the garden spot has been tilled, till the soil is loose and fine textured, adding fertilizer to the soil or using organic fertilizer like compost or worm castings to enrich the soil; Preparing pots with soil, by filling plants with a layer of rocks if gardening on a patio, for drainage and then adding potting soil and fertilizer; Planting the seeds, by buying good quality seeds to grow food and following the directions on the package for when to plant in the area and how to plant the seeds; Watering the seeds by watering the garden daily to ensure the seedlings and plants get enough moisture to grow; Weeding and tending the garden, by pulling any weeds right away so they don’t steal nutrients from the plants that grow food and keeping birds and other animals away as necessary by using fences, structures that blow in the wind, etc; Harvesting food, by being sure to pick the fresh food as it’s ready so that nothing goes to  waste in kitchen garden or indoor garden and eating the food right away for the most nutrition or freezing or canning it for enjoying later.

To grow food enables to save money and also gain a lot of choices. This requires a lot of planning. At first, the following factors are to be considered: Region, Soil and Space byfinding out if the area is a good spot for growing own crops or whether the region is an ideal place for growing fruits and vegetables or whether the soil in the backyard good for gardening or by ensuring that the garden is ideal for these plants or opting for an indoor garden; Climate and Rainfall, since the environment contributes much to plants, is the climate from where it is sufficient for the garden and finding out whether there is more rain than sunny weather or vice versa, and even ensuring whether it is too hot or too cold for plants; Food Crops, by learning what kind of food crops will compliment the environment around the home, familiarizing with these crops, ensuring whether these are enough for home, finding out how much time do these need to grow and the requirements of the plants besides the basic things – water, sunlight and so on; Cost, bymaking a budget plan and seeing if it complements income.

How can you grow strawberries in a hanging basket ?

Edit Article |

Hanging baskets are typically used to grow impressive flower displays but can also but used to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. As well as being a novel alternative to flowers growing fruit and veg in a basket is a very clever use of space especially when in a town dwelling.

Strawberries make an ideal fruit to be grown in a hanging basket by providing both a delicious fruit as well as some colour for visual effect. Strawberries should be planted in spring.

You will need all of the materials to hand – frame, compost, liner, strawberry and other plants, slow release fertiliser and 12″ of polythene.

Choose from the various different strawberry plants at your local nursery and aim to use 5-6 plants for a 14″ basket. You can in 1-2 other plants for decoration if you choose for the effect whilst the strawberry plants are growing.

Place a piece of polythene in the basket to act as a reservoir to aid water retention. Strawberries need to be well watered throughout and are even more susceptible to drying out in a hanging basket.

Use a multi purpose compost and fill the basket to about a third of the way up the side. It is best to add slow release fertilisers which have the fertiliser sealed in a resin shell which releases over a long period.

The basket will now be full of compost and fertiliser so dig small holes in the compost to position the strawberry plants on the top or the sides. Each strawberry plant that you use will need time and light so leave a minimum of 5cm between each plant. Water the basket thoroughly to ensure the compost is completely wet.

As with any plants the strawberries will need to be regularly watered over the summer period until they fruit.

In summary, if you follow these steps the strawberry plants will provide edible fruit and provide a pleasant and alternative display to using regular flowers.

Grape Vines and How They Grow

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 14, 2010 |Comments: 0

The process of growing a grape vine has some great bonuses. Freshly picked grapes can be eaten off the vine or become juice, jelly or even made into wine. The grape vines also make a picturesque garden and give shade to sunny areas. In the beginning growing your vines may seem daunting, but you will soon find that it is not very difficult. Here are some ideas on how to grow a vine.

Planting- The area where the vine will be planted is a major consideration in growing a grape vine.Grapes need heat so they should be planted in an area where they can get more sun. Grapes can grow in most soil types except for wet heavy clay. Growers just have to make sure that the growing area has good irrigation. Maintaining the pH level of the soil is important. Grapes grow in soils with pH levels between 6.5 and 7.5. Good seeds and tips on how to grow grape vines can be purchased from a trusted nursery.

Care- Growing a grape vine will need your utmost attention. Healthy roots need water at least once a week for proper growth. A 5 gallon bucket should be handy and the grape vines should be watered at least once every week. Grape clusters should be picked out. The plant should not be made to grow fruit for the first year as this is the period allotted for it to grow its roots. A “grow tube” can be used to guide in growing your grape vine and at the same time protect it from wind and animals but should be removed after the first growing season to make possible for the vines to grow thicker.

Controlling pests- Pests are the grape vine’s worst enemies. The growth of the vines and it’s produce can be hampered by invading insects. Wasps attack the berries by breaking the skin and eating the flesh. Making “wasp traps” can keep them away from the fruit. Another good way to keep wasps and other insects away is to plant a rose bush close to the vines.

Pruning- Fruit-bearing vines, like grapes, need to be pruned. Those who do not actually know how to grow grape vines may not believe in pruning as it only adds extra work. Gettng the grape vine to the shape and size you want will involve pruning. In addition it also controls the fruit bearing of the vine. If left unpruned for the first growing season it could bear abundant yields but would produce very little in the succeeding growing seasons.

Weather Conditions- Some people are hesitant because they do not know how to grow grape vines in varying weather conditions. Typically, grapes don’t need much protection from the heat and sun. But they would need protection from snow during winter. A snow cover is a much used protection. But some growers also use make-shift insulators. Straw or hay layered on the ground will provide good insulation for the roots.

The best thing to do if you are unsure of how to grow grape vines would be to consult experts or purchase some books on the subject. These provide a more in depth explanation on growing a grape vine and other relevant information.

How to Grow Your Own Fruits

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 04, 2011 |Comments: 0

Many people are wary of growing fruit. Tree fruit has a reputation for cropping unpredictably and growing too large to be managed easily. Soft fruit is thought to need a lot of pampering. So many gardeners grow only a few strawberries and get the worst of everything. A fair bit of work and a crop at a time when they are most plentiful in the shops. But fruit is not that difficult. Modern types are far more manageable in the garden. Far tougher and they crop far more reliably. There are a number of points to bear in mind if you really want to have a good chance to avoid trouble in the crops.
1. Choose a sunny, open site for your fruit and make sure it is not subject to strong winds.
2. Prepare the soil well before planting. Thorough cultivation with the addition of plenty of organic matter in the form of garden compost or manure is vital.
3. Choose dwarf growing varieties of tree fruit so that the branches are easily accessible for pruning, spraying and picking.
4. Choose a number of varieties of each crop, if you have space, to give you a long cropping period.
5. Choose varieties that are well-known for their flavor — they’ll probably taste better than bought fruit.
6. Invest in a fruit cage, it`s the only sure way of deterring the birds.
7. Adopt an organized program of feeding, spraying and watering.
So what fruit should you grow? Well, that depends on your taste. But if you haven’t got too much space avoid the currants. Plums and Cherries, Cane fruits like blackberries and loganberries are good space savers as they can be trained on fences if necessary and there are apples that can trained on fences too.

Re-potting Bonsai

To repot bonsai, carefully lift the tree out of its current pot by tilting it to one side and trying to move it by the base of the trunk. You can not pull too hard on the trunk – so if this does not work, try tapping the pot with the side of your hand to loosen the root ball or poke a stick through the drainage holes and ‘push’ the root ball out.

How to Grow Fruit Trees?

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 08, 2011 |Comments: 0

You can select fruit seeds such as apples, peaches, plums, cherries, blueberries, blackberries for growing in your garden. However, it is important to note that they require regular maintenance to flourish. With proper attention, a tree can produce fruit for up to fifty years.

In order to maintain a steady growth of the fruit trees, an appropriate climate is essential as tree growth is dependent on micro and macro climate related factors. It is good to grow more than one fruit tree variety at a time. In order to have a high harvest, majority of the trees require cross pollination to bear fruit and hence one needs to plant a variety of trees.

It is not unusual to see weed growth at the base of the tree. This growth can affect the tree and prevent normal growth by taking in all its nutrients. You can remove weeds by using pine needles or by applying bark mulch to the base of the tree. Apply this over the life time of the tree. Lawn fertilizer can be applied during spring and fall seasons. Some fruit take many years to yield and so patience is required. For example, plum trees takes up to six years and peach trees take two to four years to mature and produce fruit. When a fruit tree blossoms, remove the fruit producing flowers to make way for another year of growth and development in the tree.

The fruit trees must be protected from pests, disease and wildlife. Insecticides can be sprayed to the trees to keep away the pests. Pests can be controlled using organic pest control products, the chief benefit being that they are safer to use than their chemical counterparts. In order to avoid diseases, remove the bad fruits or instead plant disease tolerant trees.

Regular pruning of fruit trees will improve the growth and quality of the fruit. The best time to prune is when they are dormant. First, remove the bad branches. Check every fork of the tree, cut away one branch and keep horizontal benches five inches apart. At the same time ensure that over pruning is not carried out as this can cause tree damage. Each tree has own ripening periods. So you can broaden the harvest, by planting different type of trees. In some regions fresh fruits are available through out the year.

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 05, 2010 |

Want to know some of the most easy to grow vegetables? Tell you what; I’m going to give you the top 5 list of easy to grow vegetables PLUS…

I’ll also reveal the most top-notch organic gardening method. Now, I say this method is “top-notch” because if you apply it to your organic vegetable garden, you’ll get some highly positive and highly terrific results…

Listen, I’ll tell you about the method in just a bit. For now, let me give you the top 5 list of vegetables that are very easy to grow.

Note: Images and video introduction regarding this top-notch gardening method can be viewed by clicking on this link.

(1) Tomatoes

It’s not difficult to grow tomatoes. I sow the seeds in soil that’s fertile and very moist. In order to get constant supply of fresh organic tomatoes, I always make sure to sow the seeds about several weeks apart.

(2) Potatoes

Now, I love growing potatoes! What I like most about growing them is that they do not require a lot space. In fact, you can grow them in bins.

(3) Green Peas

Stalking is necessary if you want to grow them. After all, they grow on vines. You know, you can actually quicken the germination process, by soaking the seeds for about 2 hours so. After soaking, you can go ahead and sow them.

(4) Spinach

Popeye’s favorite food can be grown easily. You can start with a handful of seeds and to get constant supply, simply sow the seeds in regular sequence every month.

(5) Onion

Unlike tomatoes or spinach, onion seedlings have to be planted instead of sown. I used to dislike growing organic onions because weed management is such a pain.

But thanks to the top-notch gardening method which I’m about to share, my organic garden where I grow onions and various other vegetables does not need weed management at all!

Let me tell you, it’s so easy to grow vegetables using this method. It’s almost hassle-free!

Maybe you’ve heard of this top-notch organic gardening method. It’s called ecological gardening and it’s very simple to set up. The idea behind ecological gardening is to set up a vegetable garden that imitates natural habitat.

This way, you don’t have to worry about digging, managing weeds, crop rotation, tillage and more. Pests are also repelled naturally. Yes, you don’t have to use chemicals and pesticides on an ecological organic garden.

In addition to those benefits, ecological gardening actually produces more fresh organic fruits and vegetables compared to traditional gardening!

By the way, you can learn to set up an ecological garden within a few hours. It’s very easy to grow vegetables using the ecological gardening formula. Step-by-step videos on how to do it are available and very simple to follow along.

Just the follow this link if you’re interested in setting up an almost zero maintenance organic vegetable garden today: http://www.growingorganicfood.info

It’s never been easier to grow your own veggies using Hydroponic grow tents

Forget about soil, compost, and exposure to sunlight, you won’t need any of these elements when you grow vegetables inside Hydroponic grow tents.  Pure and simply, you can control the environment within the Hydroponic grow tents and use hydroponic grow lights to mimic the actions of the sun.  Build your own bud room and you’ll soon see shoots of new life emerging inside your tent.  Bought in kit form, the Hydroponic grow tents are very easy to assemble.  Invest in a set of hydroponic grow lights and away you go, growing any type of vegetables or plants that you like.

What do the Hydroponic grow tents look like?

They look a little like a fabric wardrobe but step inside one and the last thing that you’ll be see is a garment rail.  Outside the fabric of the Hydroponic grow tents is black, whilst the interior is silver to reflect the light that is emitted from the hydroponic grow lights.  Stand next to one of the Hydroponic grow tents and you’ll find they are approximately 2 metres tall.  Once inside, the fabric completely blocks out the light from outside enabling you to control the light settings using your new set of hydroponic grow lights.  Fancy growing your own this year?  Have a look at the Hydroponic grow tents and you could create your very own growing environment where a host of fresh produce can begin its life.

The Hydroponic grow tents sound pricey

If you think the Hydroponic grow tents are going to be pricey you could be in for a pleasant surprise.  They actually cost much less than you might imagine and accessories like hydroponic lights can be sourced at low prices as well.  Great deals can be found on hydroponic grow lights, so if you’ve always wanted to grow your own vegetables in a controlled setting, why not take a look at what the Hydroponic grow tents have to offer?  Think how tasty your produce will be after it has been grown inside one of the Hydroponic grow tents; it could help to make up your mind.
