Gardening In Paradise – Growing Fruits And Vegetables In Hawaii

Can you think of a place in the United States where it’s possible to harvest mangoes, pineapples, papayas, citrus, avocados, and bananas near the ocean throughout the year and to be able to enjoy strawberries, plums, apples and peaches in the mountain region whenever you’d like?

The only place that comes to mind is Hawaii. Hawaiian gardens are different than just about any other gardens in any other place in the world. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, orchids and jacarandas grow in abundance. The Hawaiian air is sweetened by gardenias, night-blooming jasmine and ginger. And annuals such as petunias, begonias, impatiens, zinnias, salvia, and marigolds splash color in the gardens.

Plants that are coddled in most mainland homes seem to grow like weeds in the Hawaiian isles. Orchids, palms, and philodendrons grow with abandon in the wilds – as well as in the yards of many homes. And they’re often accompanied by croton and ti, and other exotic species.

Many plants came to the Hawaiian Islands via the Polynesians, migrating birds, and ocean currents. However most arrived years ago when plant enthusiasts migrated to the islands from Europe, the Orient, and the Americas.

Some species of plants found the soil so nutritious that they seemed to go wild. Some examples include macadamia, coffee, coconuts, guava, avocados, mangos, and kukui. Anyone who wants to plant a garden has a huge array of plants to choose from – whether they want to landscape their community, business, or their home.

When choosing plants, though, the Hawaiian gardener has to take into account where they are going to have their garden. They need to know about the requirements and growth habits of the plants that they would like to grow.

One consideration is the elevation of the garden spot because of the way temperature is affected by elevation. Although temperatures rarely go below fifty degrees or higher than ninety degrees, some plants favor a specific temperature range.

Also, if the garden is located in a spot that is higher than an 8,000 foot elevation, then there could be frost almost any night throughout the year.

Another consideration is the type of soil the plants thrive in. In the islands the soil varies from being deeply acidic volcanic soil to being highly alkaline beach sand.

Richer soils also make it possible to grow the best vegetables and flowers in the world. People who live in Hawaii can pick a basket full of tomatoes, a dozen long stem roses, or a fresh green salad, no matter if it’s November or it is June.

One thing that many people in Hawaii as well as the mainland have in common is that they love to furnish their gardens with beautiful furniture.

Rose Gardening Secrets

Edit Article |

Posted: Mar 29, 2010 |

For thousands of years people have been growing roses.  Although roses have earned a reputation for being difficult to grow, plenty of rose growers disagree. Here we have compiled some rose gardening secrets that have made cultivating these beautiful blooms something anyone can do successfully.
Roses are actually quite basic in their needs: good soil, good sunlight, plenty of water and a bit of pruning.  By following the basics and learning about some basic elements of soil pH, planting and location you will be surprised at how easy it actually is to grow most varieties of roses successfully.
Before you start any preparation, choose a location for your roses. Depending on where you live, climate and access to direct sunlight are critical in growing healthy roses. Find a location in your yard or garden that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight every day, a must for rose growers everywhere. If possible, morning sun is preferable to afternoon sun.
Make sure the soil you use is rose-worthy. The soil should not be sandy, nor should it have a high clay content. You want to use a firm soil that retains its shape in your hand, yet crumbles easily. Rose roots systems grow deep, and the soil that houses it must be fit to allow the rose plant to draw the nutrients and water it needs.
Roses do best with a soil pH ranging from 6.5 to 6.8.  Additionally, roses grow best in soil with good drainage.  You may need to improve the soil that will nourish your roses with compost and organic nutrients. Add peat moss to the soil to enhance drainage.
Water is essential to roses, as it is to all plants. But when you’re watering roses, make sure you make it count. Roses have deep root systems, so a rule of thumb is two deep waterings per week. Surface watering will not benefit your roses.  Water your roses in daylight, preferably in the mornings. Watering in late evening can be problematic as it can promote powdery mildew, a common disease that targets roses.
When planting different varieties of rose bushes, follow guidelines for spacing to be sure that each plant will get adequate air circulation. Inadequate spacing of your roses can also foster the powdery mildew problem. When you purchase your rose bushes, instructions for spacing should be included with them.  Don’t be afraid to ask your garden center expert for advice if you have any questions.
Pruning your roses is not too demanding, but it is necessary for producing healthy new blooms. With the exception of climbing roses, which fare best with almost no pruning, roses need fairly routine pruning.  The best time to prune is in spring, after the last frost while the plants are still dormant from winter. Prepare the soil with a good mixture of organic fertilizer and nutrients to promote growth. This is also the best time to transplant roses, as their dormant state will prevent trauma that replanting them in full season can cause.
Make sure to choose the best type of roses for your garden; spend some time exploring your options and decide on what will work best in your lawn or garden.
Anyone can create the rose garden of their dreams by following the rose gardening secrets listed here, and adding your own TLC.

Gardens come in different varieties like the plants you find in them. There are several gardening tips that can be used for all type of gardens.

1.Mulching protects your garden topsoil from being blown away. It also provides nutrients as it decomposes and improves the appearance of your gardens. Mulching has other benefits and is one of the most recommended gardening tips by gardeners and farmers alike.

2.Healthy plants are more disease resistant. Plants are like people, a person with a strong immune system can combat diseases. A healthy plant does the same.

3. Pests can be eradicated by cleaning the plant with a watery solution of soap. Just make sure to rinse after. This gardening tip is best heeded for fruit bearing trees or edible plants.

Basic Gardening Tools and Equipment You’ll Need

Before you start your home garden activities, it’s a must to provide yourself with the needed tools and equipment in your nursery. These tools and equipment must be available all the time to make your gardening works easy and convenient.

You can work peacefully and efficiently if you have a complete tools and equipment in your nursery. You would not be worrying where to borrow because you have a complete sets of them always at hand when eventualities so arises.

You don’t need big amount to start collecting your tools and equipment. You can visit some agriculture stores for garden tools and buy at bargain those that are not so costly, especially during yard sales.

As a gardener, you’ve to follow  this slogan ” Use the Right Tool to the Right Job” to make your gardening work successful.

Some Basic Tools and Equipment

Shovels – A round-ended shovel should be preferred for digging especially for planting trees and smaller shrubs.
Garden Hoes – A garden hoe is useful for weeding and cultivating soil surfaces to allow for deeper plant root penetration of nutrients and water.
Bow Rake –Provide a good heavy duty bow rake, which has short tines on one side attached to a metal frame or ‘bow.’ This tool is vital for leveling the soil to make it ready foor planting, or for removing large clods of earth or rocks from the soil.
Spading Forks – The spading fork is needed to open and improve the soil. It looks like a pitchfork but has a shorter handle and wider tines. It is used to dig down into hard soil and break up the ground.
Dull Bolo – This tool is common in the Philippines, its uses is similar with a garden used for weeding and  cultivation.
Sharp Bolo – A sharp bolo is used to cut some grasses and small branches or generally for clearing operations prior to soil cultivation.
Garden shears – Select a pair of garden shears that fits comfortably in your hand. Shears, sometimes called clippers, are used for pruning, shaping and removing foliage or branches.
Garden Hose – Hose is necessary to water your garden. Depending on how much there is to water a sprinkler is also a good addition to the watering garden equipment list.

Sprinkler Can – This is essential for watering your plants. Long nozzles allow the water to come out at a very gentle flow rate and are useful for reaching across long distances. Select a watering can that has a detachable spray head – this type of watering can is perfect for watering young seedlings.
Hand Sprayer – Hand sprayer is useful for spraying some minor insect pests that are easily managed for minor insect attack in the garden.
Spade – Similar to shovel, but it has a square end point used for digging  and making a straight plots and beds.
Carts and wheelbarrows – are necessary to transfer some gardening tools and equipment used in your garden works. Some other  uses for carts and wheelbarrows are to collect and remove your full grown vegetables from your garden and carry  dirt’s and grass clippings away from the garden.
Garden Pruner – When you want to shape and cut back longer plants you will use the pruner garden tool. Pruners come in two styles. One is the bypass style and the other is the anvil. Pick up a couple of varieties to see which style is best for you. Pruners that have changeable blades and parts that are possible to sharpen will assist in extending the life of this piece of gardening equipment.
Garden Trowel – A garden trowel is also used for weeding and cultivation. Select the one with a steel blade to make it last longer in use. There are different types of handles to choose from. You can either select the one with rubber handles that make them easier to grip while using them and there are some that are designed to relieve stress from your wrist during use.

There are still some equipment to be purchased in your gardening operations, but these tools and equipment mentioned are the basics you should purchase. If you have already your bigger capital,  Roto-tiller or Tractor is also important in your garden.

For the meantime, be satisfied with the basic garden tools and equipment identified, you can already start you garden operations.

Happy gardening!

Why Rose Gardening Is So Addictive

Edit Article |

Posted: May 06, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

For many of us, the act of gardening brings us closer to nature by getting us outdoors and allowing us the opportunity to tend and grow objects that in the absence of our assistance would not be able to survive, let alone thrive. There is a special connection between the growers of roses and their plants, however, which seems to go even beyond the basic instincts of the traditional gardener.

The first reason that roses can be such an addictive plant is the roots it has in our culture in the form of myth and symbolism. The same reason we are addicted to rose gardening is the same reason we are willing to pay a ridiculous amount for a single flower or bunch on Valentine’s Day- nothing in our society communicates more than the rose. This cultural phenomenon has been a part of western heritage for longer than anyone can trace. The rose was considered a flower of romance in ancient China, where it was first developed, and was used throughout the Roman Empire. British history is full of roses in every context- the theater where Shakespeare’s plays were put on was known as the rose, and some of the most distinguishing events in British history occurred during the long “War of the Roses”. Roses were not actually introduced to Europe in the cultivated style until the late 1700s, when they arrived from China.

Perhaps some of the addiction we have in cultivating roses stems in part from the same areas that our ancient forebears found so appealing. Many roses have a very distinctive scent, and the shape of the rose is certainly unique enough in itself to warrant extensive cultivation and appeal. Roses can also be found in many different colors and varieties, and there is symbolism attached to every colour that roses can be found in- red, of course, symbolizes love, but did you know that pink roses carry a message of gratitude, while yellow represent joy?

Roses also represent a singular species which can manifest itself in a variety of styles, and therefore a rose gardener really needs only to focus on rose types to bring all the variety to the appearance of her lawn and garden that could be wished for. Roses can be planted in the miniature style, as bushes, and as climbers. As has been noted above, roses are also available in several different colors which will add to the overall diversity in appearance of your garden. Roses are also available in petals of many different sizes to further add diversity to your landscaping. Species roses grow hips that are colorful and last well into the winter, and can add a further sprinkle of uniqueness to your landscaping by attracting birds throughout the winter months.

Lastly, roses require as little or as much attention as the gardener wants to put in. Pruned bushes look ideal, but roses are also beautiful when allowed to grow freely. Roses also tend to be very hardy and resistant to diseases. The soil composition needs not have too many considerations, and the ground cover is totally up to the gardener.

Growing roses can be an addicting experience because of their history, their beauty, their variety, and their maintenance. Once a person dedicates their garden space to the cultivation of roses, the possibilities are limitless.

Growing Climbing Roses

Growing climbing roses is actually not so hard. They are much like ordinary roses only that they can climb up and around the area in which they are planted. But, these types of roses do not actually grow like vines that can support their own; they would need outside forces to get them to do it. These types of roses do not have they’re own support structures like other climbing plants, so they are not true climbing plants.

The first thing to be considered in flower gardening is to prepare the flower bed.  The location selected for flower garden should be such that it receives plenty of sunlight. The main thing to be considered in the flower gardening is to maintain the bloom all round the year. This can be easily done by consistently monitoring the sequence of the flowers planted in the garden.

Flower gardens add to the beauty of the landscape with different colors and fragrances filled in the atmosphere.

Flowers are seasonal. They bloom in different periods of time and wither away later on. So, we have to take into consideration all these factors in the garden and try to maintain the bloom accordingly.

If you prefer to design flower garden, then you can use the wildflower seed mix. It will help to maintain the bloom when the other flowers die. The most recommendable mixture is of the biennials and perennial plants. It will help you to maintain permanent flowerbed.

Recently, flower gardening has become a very popular hobby among people.  It is a very easy task for setting up a flower garden if you are well acquainted with some of the basics of this type of gardening.

Flower gardens can be broadly classified into the types as mentioned below:

•           Organic flower gardening

•           Wild flower gardening

•           Perennial flower gardening

Gardening tips are alike for all the types of garden. You can refer to magazines, books, and websites to gather more information about gardening. The tips would help you to prepare soil for the garden. It will also acquaint you with the different techniques of flower gardening.

Some aspects of flower gardening basics are described below:

•           The ground selected for flower gardening should be flat surface. You should begin with removing the weeds and unwanted plants on the surface

•           Then you have to loosen up the soil and add organic matter in it

•           Decide the size of the flower bed and prepare the ground accordingly. The small flower beds are mostly recommended

•           You can opt for step pruning for the perennial flowers. It would help them to bloom for longer periods. This method would help your plants in the garden to bloom in three steps and all these would bloom in succession. The last section of the plants will be the last one bloom. It would hide all the vanishing plants in the remaining two sections behind

•           The flower garden should be appropriately maintained. Opt for multihued plants in the garden

Here are some flower gardening tips which also can be utilized are described below:

•           Begin gardening with a small space. It will allow you to concentrate more on the garden and also provide you valuable experience in gardening which will be helpful in the future

•           The basic amenities required for the garden such as sunlight, water , fertilizers and soil should be there in the garden

•           Don’t opt for purchasing gardening tools indiscriminately. Opt for the tools that are utmost important for your garden. You can opt for borrowing the tools instead of purchasing them

•           You should prepare the soil bed  on your own

•           The design and the pattern of the garden should be simple

Thus, the above mentioned tips would assist you in the flower gardening. It will also provide you useful tips that can be easily followed for maintaining the bloom in the garden in all the seasons.

Organic Gardening and Lawn Care

Edit Article |

Posted: Dec 29, 2008 |Comments: 0
|

Most home owners take lot of pride in caring for their homes both inside and out, and try to make their home the best that it can be. Nice landscaping makes a person feel welcomed to the home.

Having the correct tools and lawn care products is essential to getting your garden and lawn looking its very best. Far too many people believe that the way to achieve this is through the use of pesticides and other chemicals to eliminate weeds and keep bugs under control. People do not realize that they can have a really beautiful lawn and garden using organic gardening methods, and they won’t be harming the environment in the process.

Fertilizers used on today’s lawns are full of chemicals the worst of these being nitrates and phosphates. Since it takes several pounds of fertilizer to treat one lawn, you are exposing your family and pets to a great deal of toxic products. Fertilizers are known to trigger asthma, are a known carcinogen, and cause neurological problems in young children and pets. Worse yet these chemicals get into the soil and into our drinking water supply.

So what can you do to make the switch to organic gardening? The first change you should make is to switch to using natural compost. Despite what people think, composting is not difficult. Simply purchasing a compost container where you dispose of food scraps, pet dropping, and your lawn and leaf litter is the first step. By its very nature, the amount of composting material generated, will be a lot less that the amount of material that you start out with. You want to save your materials all year long to make enough compost to serve your garden.

Having good soil will produce a much healthier and longer root system, which will in turn produce healthier plants and grass. Long roots require less water to keep it green. This will cut back on your water bill as well.

Many communities are under water restrictions, so having good soil and a good root system will allow you to have a lovely lawn and garden despite those water restrictions.

It is also important to know that watering should be done in the early morning hours to avoid loss of water to evaporation. Watering in the heat of the day will result in most of the water being evaporated before being used by the plants. Watering during the nighttime hours exposes your lawn to fungus.

Another way to preserve the water you use is by adding a layer of mulch over the top of the soil to reduce evaporation loss.

If you are the type that enjoys spending a lot of time on your lawn, use organic gardening methods. This will keep toxic chemicals from harming your family and pets.

The use of native plants is another good organic practice. To avoid disappointment, choose the proper plants and grass that grow in your area. Not all plants grow in all area, and may need extra water and care to survive.

There is a benefit to choosing native grass and giving at a good root system. Those lawns hold up much better to foot traffic and child’s play. You certainly wouldn’t want a lawn that everyone has to stay off in order for it to look nice.

Far too many individuals immediately reach for chemicals to kill off weeds. It is important to first find out what type of weed is growing to indentify the problem you are having. Overwatering may produce weeds that thrive in a wet environment. Simply cutting down on the amount of water you are using will eliminate the problem.

Some weeds can actually be beneficial to your lawn, and you may want to leave them alone. They can serve as a natural fertilizer for your yard. The rest of the weeds should be either pulled out by hand or to use tools to remove them. Just make sure you pull them from the roots up so they can’t re-grow as easily.

Many people just run weeds over with their lawnmowers. This is not a good idea as there are seeds in the weeds. Cutting them with the lawnmower will result in the weeds spreading all over the place. This will result in your having more weeds in more areas than when you began.

One final change you need to make before you go organic is to choose the proper lawn mower. A reel type mower puts no pollutants into the air and does not produce noise pollution. You also get the benefit of exercise using a reel lawn mower.

The next best choice is an electric mower. This type mower has improved over the years. They are now battery operated and do not require a long electric cord to operate. Last is the gas powered lawn mower. These are probably the most polluting device used by homeowners. One hour of using a lawn mower is equivalent to driving 1300 miles in an automobile. To truly go organic, ditch the gas lawn mower.

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 05, 2010 |

Want to know some of the most easy to grow vegetables? Tell you what; I’m going to give you the top 5 list of easy to grow vegetables PLUS…

I’ll also reveal the most top-notch organic gardening method. Now, I say this method is “top-notch” because if you apply it to your organic vegetable garden, you’ll get some highly positive and highly terrific results…

Listen, I’ll tell you about the method in just a bit. For now, let me give you the top 5 list of vegetables that are very easy to grow.

Note: Images and video introduction regarding this top-notch gardening method can be viewed by clicking on this link.

(1) Tomatoes

It’s not difficult to grow tomatoes. I sow the seeds in soil that’s fertile and very moist. In order to get constant supply of fresh organic tomatoes, I always make sure to sow the seeds about several weeks apart.

(2) Potatoes

Now, I love growing potatoes! What I like most about growing them is that they do not require a lot space. In fact, you can grow them in bins.

(3) Green Peas

Stalking is necessary if you want to grow them. After all, they grow on vines. You know, you can actually quicken the germination process, by soaking the seeds for about 2 hours so. After soaking, you can go ahead and sow them.

(4) Spinach

Popeye’s favorite food can be grown easily. You can start with a handful of seeds and to get constant supply, simply sow the seeds in regular sequence every month.

(5) Onion

Unlike tomatoes or spinach, onion seedlings have to be planted instead of sown. I used to dislike growing organic onions because weed management is such a pain.

But thanks to the top-notch gardening method which I’m about to share, my organic garden where I grow onions and various other vegetables does not need weed management at all!

Let me tell you, it’s so easy to grow vegetables using this method. It’s almost hassle-free!

Maybe you’ve heard of this top-notch organic gardening method. It’s called ecological gardening and it’s very simple to set up. The idea behind ecological gardening is to set up a vegetable garden that imitates natural habitat.

This way, you don’t have to worry about digging, managing weeds, crop rotation, tillage and more. Pests are also repelled naturally. Yes, you don’t have to use chemicals and pesticides on an ecological organic garden.

In addition to those benefits, ecological gardening actually produces more fresh organic fruits and vegetables compared to traditional gardening!

By the way, you can learn to set up an ecological garden within a few hours. It’s very easy to grow vegetables using the ecological gardening formula. Step-by-step videos on how to do it are available and very simple to follow along.

Just the follow this link if you’re interested in setting up an almost zero maintenance organic vegetable garden today: http://www.growingorganicfood.info

Tips for Success With Your Organic Gardening

Edit Article |

The last decade has seen a huge upswing in the demand for organic fruits and vegetables and all organic food stores and most supermarkets stock them. Organic vegetable gardening is what people looking at these days as they have realized that the use of fertilizers and pesticides do more harm than good. But the main reasons people have to not become involved in organic gardening are the time and effort that is needed to both start and maintain an organic garden. The organic gardening market is big business and many of the products available aren’t always the most effective tools to producing a healthy herb garden. Fortunately, there are a lot of good sites dealing with organics and a lot of good gardening books out there. Organic gardening is the practice of growing vegetables, herbs and fruits. Organic gardening has become a popular method for ordinary people to grow their own vegetables, using only natural methods of fertilization and pest-control. Although organic gardens can take time to build and require a certain amount of dedication, as an organic garden is safer, cheaper and more satisfying! Organic gardening is no harder than traditional gardening methods once you have how the basics in place.

One of the first things you should consider are the benefits that organic gardening will provide you and your family. Organic gardening is an extra benefit because everything that you will be eating is pesticide and chemical free which is healthier for you and your family. By growing it yourself, you can save yourself thousands of dollars a year in food expenses. They will not only be completely fresh and healthy but will have had a zero environmental impact. However to grow an organic garden is not as difficult as it might seem. Your organic garden should be free from chemical pollutants, like factories, machine shops or other hazardous materials detrimental for your organic products. Since you’re not using chemical fertilizers, you need to amend the soil with the proper organic compounds to feed the soil and in turn feed your plants. It takes time to improve your soil organically and see the fruits of your labors. You should also do your research as to see what crops for your organic garden would be best for your area. Other things to consider are the type of soil that you currently have and also how much sunlight exposure the plants that you want to grow will need. Sure, you can create an organic gardening paradise in your home, but you need a lot of space, light, and a desire to make it work indoors that is usually worthwhile once it is set up and going.

Gardening for Kids

Edit Article |

Posted: Dec 18, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

While they are young, it is of utmost importance to instill in the minds of kids a deep appreciation and an understanding of the importance of nature and its beauty.

That is to say, they should also be taught early in their lives that gardening is one of the easy ways of preserving nature.

Parents should find the art of gardening a fun, rewarding and exciting activity for their kids to engage in. Gardening serves as a perfect avenue for the kids to express their creativity while having fun at the same time.

Teaching children how to garden should be a fun family experience, for all members.

Benefits

Kids are always on the lookout for something new and interesting, and gardening provides them a perfect opportunity to explore and experience while learning. There is so much kids can learn and discover about nature and the environment by learning how to plant and grow plants.

Through gardening, children are able to learn much about weather, insects, birds, flowers, plant life, and the environment. Their gardens will serve as their real-life science classrooms as they get lessons that will enrich their knowledge about the facts of life.

Starting off

Kids also enjoy helping out in the garden, so it is best to teach them the basic tools and instruments used in gardening. But ideally, it should all start with a plan to involve the kids in all the steps in preparing the garden. The time can be shortened so kids will not reach the point of getting bored and losing interest.

The garden should be prepared by planting in wide-row, raised small beds. A postage stamp-sized plot would be the most suitable, but the size of each garden would depend on the age of the kid. For younger ones, gardens could be as small as six square feet while older kids will do with 100 square feet.

Choosing the plants

When choosing the plants, it is best to select those that are kid-friendly, such as crops or vegetables, herbs and flowers.

In this manner, they can keep their interest with their favorite flowers and vegetables, all with different colors and scents. It is also good to have something that kids can enjoy out of what is harvested from the garden.

They will find it enjoyable to have a tangible result of their efforts in the garden and that they can actually see and try a product of their own gardening. This activity will arouse the creativity of the kids as it allows the kids to experiment and be ingenious in tools and furniture. They can decorate their own garden and decorate their pots.

The kids can also choose which garden decoration and ornaments to use and where to put them.

True enough, children will find it a worthwhile activity to creating gardens and cultivating them. These gardens will allow them to translate their creativity and imagination into something they can see and touch.

The kid garden is their new playground where it integrates fun and learning. Surely, parents should never miss gardening as an activity for their kids.

Shopping through greenhouses for sale and choosing one, can increase the likleyhood of your child wanting to garden.
