Easy Basics For Proper Rose Bush Care

While there are many beautiful flowers in creation, perhaps the most beautiful and well loved is the rose. Roses have been cultivated for thousands of years. In records of the oldest civilizations, there is evidence of roses in cultivation. Not limited to one locale, roses are found is almost every country.

While growing roses is a very rewarding experience, many gardeners miss out on the joy of raising roses because of the belief that they are difficult to grow. Contrary to this widespread misconception, roses can be just as easy to grow as other plants if a few simple principles are followed. You can enjoy the beauty that roses bring by learning some basic principles of gardening care.

Rose bushes do not come in just one form. There is a wide range of varieties available. No matter what type of rose bush you prefer or color or scent, and no matter the size of your garden or where you live, there is a rose bush variety that will fit your needs. By understanding the basic requirements that rose bushes need, caring for roses can be easy.

The first of those requirements is sun. The majority of rose varieties require at least six hours of unfiltered sun a day. There are also rose varieties that require less sun and are touted as “shade tolerant;” however they still require at least four to six hours of sun.

Roses also need good soil to thrive. Being heavy feeders, they need plenty of nutrients for proper growth. Poor soil can be amended with compost and other organic matter to improve the quality.

As with any type of plants, roses are susceptible to pests on occasion. The most common types of pests that affect roses are: rose midge larva, rose cane borer, thrips, Japanese beetles, stem girders, aphids, rose slugs, mites, caterpillars, scale insects, and rose chafers.

While not the most fun part of gardening, combating pests will be a necessary task from time to time. The first step is to identify the type of pest that is attacking your rose. The second step is to decide on the way you will address it. If the infestation has not spread very far, the easiest (and most economical) way is to simple remove the bugs by hand. Remove the entire leaf that is infested as there may be eggs on it. If the pests are more pervasive, you will need to take another route. Will you use synthetic chemical or use an organic solution. It is important to carefully following the directions for these products, even if they are considered organic, as they can be harmful if used improperly. Another effective method in battling pests is to place the natural enemies of the problem pests in your garden. For example, some herbs and other plants will keep pests away when planted amongst your roses. Also some bugs are actually beneficial and will eat the harmful pests, such as ladybugs and some wasps. bugs if planted as companion plants. Some bugs, such as ladybugs and some wasps, are actually beneficial and will eat the pests.

Another very important part of caring for your roses is deadheading, which is also referred to as pruning. By removing spent blooms, the rose bushes are strengthened and revived. If the flowers are not removed, the energy of the rose plant will be directed to setting seed and it will stop blooming for that season.

Many gardeners feel that a garden is not complete without rose bushes. If shown proper care, you can enjoy rose blooms from Jun until the first frost. Adding elegance to your home, rose bushes are a beautiful addition to your yard.

The Basics of Care for Miniature Roses

Edit Article |

Basics of mini roses

One of the first questions I get is “Are Miniature Rose Bushes delicate and Fragile?” The Surprising answer is miniature rose bushes and the care of miniature roses bushes, are very similar to that of the regular-sized rose bushes. They are actually pretty hardy.

Sunlight

Miniature Roses require a full 6-8 hours of good sunshine per day. They can survive with a bit less sun, but this will affect the way and how much they bloom. Like the larger rose plants, the less sunlight they have, the less they will bloom, in an aspect type ratio.

An example is if they need 8 hours of sunshine to produce 8 blooms, and they only get 6 hours of sunshine, then they will only bloom 6 times, instead of 8. This can have a huge effect on commercial rose crops as a reduction in light can mean a large flower production drop.

Feeding

For feeding I generally do a spring feeding with a good compost to give the soil a good boost of nutrients. When the first flower buds start to show I will then use a good organic food such as fish emulsion. I do this to provide them with an “extra” push to help flower production. I don’t use chemical fertilizers because these tend to strip away the beneficial flora in the soil and kill the microorganisms that help the plants.

Watering

I like to recommend watering of roses in inches, so a good 1 to 1.5 inches of water every week is good and what I give. The way I measure in inches is with a very inexpensive rain gauge that is found at the garden shop. I put it next to one of my rose bushes and then water it. When the water hits 1-1.5 inches I am done.

Once I get a good feel for this I can then generally eyeball the amount of water I give them each time. I don’t over water either, roses hate being saturated and standing in puddles of water.

Another way I figure out watering is to have the base of the rose in a circular valley or dirt moat. I fill the valley up with water once if it is 2 inches deep and let it drain. I do this one more time and then I am done watering for the next couple of days. That is how I water.

Soil

Roses, especially in pots, need to be put in good soil. Clay based soil is ok for roses, so is your average garden potting soil. Sandy soils are generally not good unless you are really vigilant and keep an eye on watering and maintaining good water levels. Letting a rose dry out will halt flower production and growth screeches to a halt.

Even if you decide to use sandy soils and use a lot of water it, a rose will not tolerate standing water for any length of time, and as an aside, this is not a good pond-side plant.

Pruning

So you just bought a new miniature rose plant and it’s covered with flowers, the first thing you want to do is prune it. First seek out and carefully prune back the old wilting or just fading roses. This should leave you with a small round bush or mound of canes.

Canes are what the branches of the rose bush are called. So try to manicure this to a well rounded shape with the center of the bush being slightly taller than the outer areas. If you have a choice in your cuts, definitely cut or “prune” so that an outward facing bud is at the top of the cane. If you don’t see one, don’t worry, later you will have one but for now just prune and shape.

Overwintered Roses

The period of time a rose goes through winter is called “Overwintering”. If you’ve gone through an overwinter with your roses and not sure what to do next, take a pick of 5-8 of the best, healthiest and thickest canes and prune away the rest. We want to focus the rose’s energy on feeding the best of the bunch and not the smaller ones.

If you’ve rooted a new bush from a cutting, don’t prune except to remove flowers before they start bloom. We want the energy to be put into root and leaf production, instead of blooms, this insures the new cutting will survive the season and have a better chance of staying the long haul.

Once it’s in its second year, then we’ll pruning the miniature roses as stated in the previous paragraph. An aside is that it might not throw too many canes in the first year but each year it will get larger and larger.

Since miniature roses are not grafted as the large varieties are, and are grown on it’s own root stock, canes that come from below ground are not a problem and can be left to grow. These canes will flower normally but also insure the growth of the root system. If these new grown canes are part of the 5-8 strong canes described in the previous paragraph, it is ok to leave them.

With these basic tips on the miniature rose bush, almost anyone can maintain a beautiful and healthy miniature rose garden. Miniature roses are in a class all by themselves as they are small and tiny, and have definite following all their own amongst Rosarians.

Ten Easy Steps to Excellent Rose Care

Edit Article |

It’s no good just planting roses and hoping for the best, roses need to be looked after like the ladies they are. It is important to maintain them and ensure they stay as healthy as they can possibly be.  If you look after your roses, they will reward you with their presence. Here are ten easy steps to excellent rose care which cover everything you will ever need to know in making sure your roses are happy.

Step One – Buying

You need to make sure the roses you choose for your garden have been looked after well before you buy them. Plants that haven’t been pruned should have at least 3 18 inch canes with a diameter of no less than ¼ inch at the top. Rose enthusiasts prefer buying rose plants in tar paper pots because they can be transplanted at any time of the year.

Step Two – Planting

When planting your roses, you need to make sure you select a sunny and well drained location. Start by trimming away all broken and bruised roots and then cut the top growth back by 6-8 inches. The hole you dig to put the plant in needs to be 6 inches deeper than the depth of the roots and the roots should have enough space not to be crowded. A very effective way of facilitating drainage for your roses is by placing pebbles or small rocks in the bottom of the plant hole.

Step Three – Soil

The rocks and pebbles that you have added for drainage should be covered with soil mixed with 1 tablespoon of fertilizer. Once you have done this, you should then cover the fertilized soil with plain soil bringing the level up to the required planting depth. It is important to firm the soil slightly 2 or 3 times to eradicate any air pockets.

Step Four – Feeding

The first feed for your rose should come in early spring or as soon as the leaf buds begin to swell. Plant food can be bought in any garden center and should be weaved into the soil around the rose. You will need to use 1 tablespoon of fertilizer per rose plant. The second feeding comes immediately following the first heavy bloom and the third feeding should be made in the late summer. If you live in a northern area it is best not to feed after the middle of August.

Step Five – Summer

Water is a basic need the rose plant cannot live without and the summer months take their toll on plants drying up under the raging heat of the sun. You will need to water generously in hot weather.

Step Six – Mulching

If you want to keep those nasty weeds at bay then try mulching your rose plant in the summer months. This will reduce the loss of moisture from the soil and supply your rose with nutrients and protection against the sun.

Step Seven – Diseases

One of the most common reasons rose growers fail to produce healthy roses, is because of the pests that view your lovely roses as fast food. Garden centers are bursting with insect repellents and pesticides to help protect your rose from harm. A less toxic way of protecting your rose is to dust it every ten days, which is proven to stop pests lingering around for a bite to eat.

Step Eight – Pruning

Pruning follows a few basic rules for success.
a) You need to remove all wood killed or injured during the winter months.
b) You don’t need to keep the weak and lifeless growth; it only acts as baggage that won’t benefit the rose in any way.
c) Try to remove as little healthy wood as possible.
d) Hybrid roses should be cut back to between 18 and 24 inches. Ramblers need to be pruned just after they have bloomed.

Step Nine – Winter Protection

It is the cold and the heat that can kill off a rose. From boiling to freezing then back again acts to sever the roots and cause the plant to die of starvation. Many rose enthusiasts in the winter months wrap the roots with a bag, like a coat to protect from the harsh winter temperatures.

Step Ten – Enjoy Your Roses

After maintaining your roses it is important to sit back and enjoy the results of your efforts.  You can watch the red lady dancing in the breeze lighting up your garden.

Ten Easy Steps to Excellent Rose Care

Professional Lawn Services and Do-it-yourself – Selecting A Suitable Lawn Care Approach

Edit Article |

|

Lawns can remain beautiful and attractive if their owners maintain them correctly through out the year. Either they can hire the do-it-yourself or the professional lawn services techniques. The latter is a technique involving hiring of experts with ample knowledge of agriculture. In simpler words, they have the best knowledge of weed elimination, best fertilizers, irrigation, sowing seeds and so on.

The second technique is all about you doing every gardening and landscaping task. For instance, you would plough, prepare nurseries, scatter seeds, nurture and water plants, apply fertilizers, and so on. Without enough time, knowledge and experience, you may be sorry for trying the DIY method. There is no doubt that you can save money, but if your work does not go as planned, you might spend even more money correcting the problem.

Hiring has its pros and cons too, and that is why you must take time to think and decide. You will surely have a dilemma in choosing professional lawn services or personal approach just as many other people. You may want to try personal approach when you need to save money. Even so, you must set aside time for research and learning about caring for a lawn and its vegetation.  Additionally, you must allocate enough time for each project to end successfully.

If you apply your research and study, it would be easy for you to avoid failure. Applying trial and error tactics would no longer be very necessary.  If already you are a trained agriculturalist, then you can maintain your garden throughout the year. When you want to attend to your farm needs personally, you must know the best, tools, plants, chemicals and fertilizers that would survive in your locality and so on.

If you need to avoid all these learning hassles, then your best option is hiring professional lawn services. They would do everything on your behalf in exchange for a fee. These companies can really shoulder your lawn problems while you concentrate on other important matters.  Even so, many landowners find it difficult to choose the most appropriate lawn care provider. Now that every service or product is available on the Internet, you should not have any problems choosing.

Everyone wants to save time so that he or she can take an extra job, education, be with family and so on. At the same time, a garden needs time and skill to remain beautiful all year round. If a lawn care carries out the gardening tasks on your behalf, then you can create time for something else. What is more, you would not worry anymore about the process going wrong and losing your money. If this happens, you would certainly have someone to hold responsible, but if you do it yourself, then you would only hold yourself accountable.

Re-potting Bonsai

To repot bonsai, carefully lift the tree out of its current pot by tilting it to one side and trying to move it by the base of the trunk. You can not pull too hard on the trunk – so if this does not work, try tapping the pot with the side of your hand to loosen the root ball or poke a stick through the drainage holes and ‘push’ the root ball out.

Lawn Care – How Frost Affects Grass Seeds

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 23, 2011 |

Having a beautiful lawn with lush green grass is a dream of every home owner. Your lawn shows your aesthetic sense and reflects your personality. A beautiful and healthy garden is a thing of beauty which makes every home owner proud, but this can only be achieved through proper lawn care. Making a lawn is no doubt hard work, but keeping it looking great through the years is even harder. This becomes even harder during winter season.

The most threatening thing for a lawn during the winter season is “frost”. Frost occurs on cold and clear nights, when the weather is extremely cold. So I would suggest never think of seeding grass in that season. The growth of grass depends on how you kept and stored the seed.

You have to understand that you can’t plant grass at any time during the year. There is a time for planting the grass seeds. Never think of planting grass seeds during the winter or early spring season as the frost will spoil the seed and make it unviable. The best time for planting the seed is mid spring when the air is warm and moist. This is the best climate for the germination of grass. In parts of the world where spring season is comparatively dry and warmer, the planting of grass seeds should be done in early spring when the frost subsides. For good lawn care you should keep a close watch on the weather conditions and find out which are most suited for sowing new seeds in your area. As a rule, never go for sowing when the ground is cold.

When you see the climate is suitable for planting grass seeds, dig the ground four to five inches, take the seeds out from storage and sow them. By the time the seeds begin to germinate; the temperature would be perfect for the grass to grow. So the best time to plant grass is early or mid-spring season depending on your area. This means that grass needs moist and wet climate for good growth. So if the natural moisture is not available; then water the grass with you irrigation pipe.

So for good lawn care the most important thing is to prevent grass seeds from frost as it is not at all suitable for them. It’s important to wait for the frosty season to get over and then think of taking the grass seeds out of tis storage container. As each seed contains a tiny droplet of water at its core to be used upon germination if that water freezes because of the frost it will expand and damage the seed. So let the frosty season go and wait for the spring to plant grass seeds.

Taking Care of Yourself and Your Lawn! Lawn Care Safety Tips!

Edit Article |

Summertime comes around the same time every year. As it rears its head, the grass starts to grow, and weeds begin to infest the lawn. It is time to take out the lawnmower and the weed eater and begin sculpting the lawn. However, landscaping can be a dangerous activity if safety precautions are not taken.

The first step to making sure that your lawn care is accomplished safely is to inspect the lawn for anything that can become tangled in the blades of the lawnmower. This includes things like toys, sticks, dog feces, rocks, or anything else that could be flung at you while mowing the lawn. At the same time, you should also be certain that pets are out of the way. When mowing the lawn, it may be warmer than desired; however, you should still wear long pants if tolerable to help protect your legs from any debris coming off the mower. Never mow barefoot, and avoid sandals. Use supportive sneakers or some form of enclosed shoe to help protect your feet.

Goggles are a good idea; any pieces of dirt or grass flying up into your face could scratch your eyes, so it is best to protect them. This is especially true if you are trimming or edging. Before beginning, you should consider the damage the sun can inflict. Be sure to wear a proper amount of sunscreen and perhaps a hat to help shield you from the ultraviolet rays. Be sure to hydrate yourself, as you will be sweating and losing precious fluids while you work. Landscaping is a hefty undertaking, even at minimal effort, and it can severely dehydrate an unprepared individual.

Check the fuel tank of the lawnmower prior to beginning it’s never a good idea to fill the tank when it is hot from use, and you should not have gas cans close to the exhaust pipe when warm, as fumes could ignite. Never try to unclog a lawnmower without first turning it off and disconnecting the spark plug. It is possible for some models to start upon rotation of the blade, even if the power is off. This poses a serious danger to digits and limbs that can easily be avoided by taking the proper precautions.

Never pull the lawnmower toward you, and never leave it or any other tools running while unattended. If you find that you need to trim or weed eat an area above the head, do NOT use a typical weed whacker or hedge trimmer. Use a cherry picker. If the cord becomes tangled, be sure to disconnect power before trying to untangle it.

Overall, landscaping and lawn care can be an enjoyable experience. Many people enjoy the satisfaction of sculpting a beautiful lawn and planting flowers and shrubs. However, if the proper safety precautions are not observed, your contented time in the yard could turn into catastrophe.

Letting Your Children Help With Lawn Care

Edit Article |

Posted: Sep 26, 2007 |Comments: 0

Lawn care doesn’t need to be tedious and it can actually be something that the whole family can help with.

It can be a great activity involving the whole family when it comes to caring for your lawn. You can get your children to keep the lawn clean and it can help to teach them lessons about responsibility. As well as teaching them various lessons, it can also be a fun activity and it can also help to build up a good relationship with your kids at the same time.

A lot of the time the children will want to help their parents with the outdoor tasks and it can help to bring a sense of achievement when the lawn has finally been finished.

Involving Your Children in the Lawn Care

You may want to allocate certain tasks to your kids and to rotate them around in order to keep it more fun. That way it will make them want to help out again in the future. It can be tricky at times to get the whole family involved with the garden and the lawn duties; especially if you are always busy yourself. It is a good idea to get things organized and to assign each person their own duties so that they know exactly what they are doing. It is also a good idea to make a schedule that is easy to keep and which makes it easy for the kids to do as well.

One task that you may want to involve your kids in is when it comes to planting the grass for the lawn. You can get the children to help you to purchase the grass seeds. Then they can maybe help you to sow the seeds on the ground, which can make them feel good for helping out when it starts to grow. Also, by getting your children to help you out, it can help you to complete the task a lot faster as well so it does have some great benefits.

You will need to handle fertilizer with caution if you want to involve your children with this process; especially if the fertilizer has chemicals in it. If your children are not old enough, you may want to either do the task yourself or make sure that they have the right protective clothing and gloves.

You should keep younger children away from machinery such as lawnmowers and if you do let them they will need to be closely supervised to avoid getting seriously injured.

As you can see, when it comes to lawn care you can involve the whole family in certain tasks. So you may want to delegate little tasks to your children. This helps to make everyone feel involved and it also makes lighter work of the task ahead too. With hard work the results will really speak for themselves, as it could end up being a lawn that you can all be proud of.

Watering your Lawn is Important

In some areas, if you don’t water your lawn grass doesn’t grow. In others it may rain often enough that the lawn does fine for parts of the year, or even all year round. In most places, to keep a nice lush lawn from dying, you have to water it at least part of the year.

Starting Your Own Lawn Care Business

Edit Article |

Posted: Sep 24, 2007 |Comments: 0

If you are looking to start up your own lawn care business, you will need to do a lot of research in order to make sure that it is possible for you to do it.

When it comes to starting your own business it can be an exciting time and it can bring financial and emotional freedom with it at the same time. If you are interested in providing a great lawn care service to clients and you know everything that there is to know about it, then this could be a great business for you. The good thing about this line of business is that there is a very high demand for great lawn care services. So if you can provide a high quality service then you could bring in a very profitable income from it.

Is a Lawn Care Business for You?

To determine whether this line of business is the best option for you then you should consider whether you actually enjoy doing lawn care yourself. If you really enjoy lawn care and you know about the things that can help it to grow properly as well as the certain conditions that can affect it, then you could do extremely well. If you just want to set up your own lawn care business for the money but you have no passion for the job, then there is a high chance that it will not be a successful business.

If this business is something that you are passionate about then it is certainly worth being given a lot of thought, but it is something that you cannot rush into. When it comes to small businesses, it is an extremely wise idea to enjoy what you are doing, otherwise you will not want to put your all into it and you will not be able to compete with any competition in the same field. Something that you may need to keep in mind is the fact that it can be irregular hours and it may include nights and weekends too.

Another thing to remember is that to start with you probably will have to do all of the work yourself and if in time your business has picked up, you may be in the position to hire staff to help you. You may need to keep your full time job whilst you are setting up your business, just to have something to full back on in case your business does not take off how you hoped it would.

If you have decided that the best option for you is to set up your own lawn care business then you will need to do as much research as possible in order to help you on your way. You need to consider all of the start up costs, the equipment that you will need as well as accountants and lawyers etc. By having everything in front of you, you can then start to build for the future and try to make your business as successful as possible.

Lawn Care Service Bergen County- Lawn Care Service

Edit Article |

Lawn Treatment
Bergen County

Fall lawn care, including winterizing your lawn, sets the stage for how your lawn will weather winter damage.

Test Your Soil

Samples should be gathered from two to three inches below the surface of the soil. Use a trowel or a spoon to collect the sample. Don’t touch it with your hands as residue from your body, particularly if you smoke, could alter the results.

Put each sample in a separate jar and label it according to where it came from. For home lawn soil testing, it is a good idea to take a sample from each corner of the lawn, as well as a sample from the center and another from any place that is very different from the rest of the lawn, such as a sunny spot or a place that doesn’t drain very well.

Try to get any debris such as rocks or roots out of the soil sample, again without touching the soil.

Most soil test kits will ask you to combine your soil sample with water and allow it to settle for a period of time before using it in the test kit. Always read and follow the directions for the kit you buy. If you are sending your samples out to be tested, gather and store your samples as requested.
Aerate Your Lawn

Aerating is usually either done with a Power Aerator (or Coring Machine) or a Manual (foot-pressed) Aerator. The Power Aerator kind of resembles a conventional motorized snow blower with the engine on top and wheels on the back or sides. The major difference is that the Power Aerator has a circular wheel in the front or back with hollow cylinders or spikes pointing out around the wheel. The manual version will often have around four hollow cylinders on the bottom with a foot plate on top for pressing into the soil, much like a shovel.

Fertilize

Fall fertilization is best because the lawn has passed through the stressful summer months and needs food to rebuild itself. During the fall season there is less competition from weeds, insects and diseases. Nutrients are required to take full advantage of the cool weather growth period to restore the lawn to full health and prepare it for the next summer.

Seed

The perfect time to start a new lawn is in the fall. In cold-weather climates, fall’s cooler temperatures prevent the seeds from drying out, but there’s still enough sun and rain to help them germinate before going into hibernation for the winter, without the competition of crabgrass and other weeds that die off this time of year.
