Tips On Gardening and Taking Care of Your Lawn

The internet has plenty of information and articles available for those who want to learn more about growing things. There are even articles for gardeners who have years of experience under their belts. Even gardeners who have won medals like to keep current on gardening trends. Since you are a new gardener you probably have a lot of ideas about how growing a garden of your very own is supposed to work.
While you learn how to grow your own garden you are probably going to encounter a lot of contradictory ideas. Figuring out which advice s good and which advice is bad might take you some time. Here are some tips put together by experts that are designed for new gardeners.
Go slowly. If this is the first time you’ve grown a garden begin with one plant (or just a couple of one type of plant) and a small plot of soil. This will help you gain practical experience in things like soil tending and plant care. If you do well with your first plant (or patch of plants) then you can move up to more complicated gardens and gardening techniques. Many newbie gardeners take on way too much way too soon and then later they are disappointed when they can’t seem to grow a vast array of plant life. To really learn the art of gardening start small and work your way up-don’t skip steps.
Slugs and snails are pretty much the most irritating pests in a garden. You should get over your squeamishness as soon as possible. These pests love garden plants and are excellent hiders so even if you develop a way of dealing with them, you probably won’t get rid of them all. Get used to the idea of taking them off of your plants.
Strategically placed jars of beer and running some copper wire are some of the popular folk remedies for gardens plagued by slugs and snails. There are even special traps and special food that you can try to use to lure them away from your plants but sooner or later you will have to learn to deal with them first hand.
Composting is a fantastic way to keep your growing garden healthy. You can make your own compost without having to buy special things.
Beginning your own compost pile is easy. A compost pile can be built from things like grass clippings, bedding from a hamster cage (or any caged pet really), old flower cuttings, dead plants and flowers from your garden, tea bags, egg shells, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps from meals, fruit and vegetables that have started to sour before you eat them-all of it can be used in a compost pile. Just leave the meat out of it and your compost pile will be just fine. You’ll have created homemade fertilizer and garden food all on your own! Lots of people think that gardening is difficult. Believe it or not gardening is something everyone can do! Don’t let yourself feel intimidated by the different and complex gardens you will see on television or in magazines. You might not be ready to believe this yet but it truly is possible for you to grow the lush gardens you’ve fantasized about having. With just a few seasons of gardening even a total newbie can learn how to have great luck with plants. Have fun! You’ll get there eventually!

The Charm Of French Garden Furniture
The French garden furniture of today draws from a rich and diverse history that resulted in many different styles. From 1715 onward, as the formal French gardens began to yield to the free design of landscaped gardens, people began to enjoy new forms of social leisure at more intimate and beautifully organized “Rococo” garden-parks, distinguished by its naturalistic lattice and leaf pattern at the back with a honeycomb pattern pierced seat that was usually produced in cast iron.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to lose a few pounds. Finding someone who has zero problems with the number they see on the scale is incredibly difficult. The key is to look at your own weight loss in the right light. If you approach it thinking that a fad diet will help you, you won’t lose much weight at all (or, at the very least, you won’t be able to keep it off). Approaching your own weight loss with a negative attitude makes it even harder to lose weight. If you kee…

Upside Down Tomatoes

Does your tomato garden patch get you down? Your tomato plants are straggling, your stakes break away and weeds plague you? Do not despair… you can bring adventure back into your gardening. Just start growing tomatoes upside down.
Surprised?. No one is…. not the least Mr. Bill Felknor, an inventor from Knox will Tennessee who believes God intended tomatoes to be grown upside down. Two million Americans think so too as they set about growing plants that will ideally produce 30 pounds of tomatoes each. The idea grows on you and suddenly isn’t too far-fetched either. Growing tomatoes need not be a back-breaking chore and you don’t have to cover yourself in garden soil rooting for weeds and aphids.
The upside down tomato doesn’t need a lot of garden space either. Even a small patio., r a terrace or balcony will suffice to set up your hanging garden. Plant your tomatoes, root them in a good potting soil and you can sit on the patio and imagine you can see your plants grow like Jack’s beanstalk.
All you need to start some good tomato seedlings, potting soil, a 5 gallon paint can with handle or an old bucket, a watering can and a good bit of trellis wire .Place the can or bucket upside down and with a utility knife carve out a hole at least 3+ in diameter. Now set the bucket (or can right side up between two wooden benches and fill them with the soil all around the hole you have just drilled. Gently hold the tomato plant by the stem and leaves and thread it through the hole so that the shoots hang down and the root ball is retained inside the bucket. Add more soil around the roots; also use some sorghum moss or coffee filters to keep the seedling from falling out of the hole. You can now pack the soil tightly and up to three inches below the rim of the bucket. Water the plants carefully the commercial ones have a water retention sponge that addresses the main problem with container gardens, allowing the water to seep in and fill up the loose spaces within the soil. When eater begins to drip out from the shoots out., lift the bucket by its handle taking care not to let the plants trail on the ground. Hang the tomato bucket on to a post or patio using the trellis wire. Now your tomatoes are ready to grow upside down. the commercial ones have a water retention sponge that addresses the main problem with container gardens, If, however, you don’t like working with beat-up cans or tools send out your order for a ” hanging garden’
Felknor sold seven million of these contraptions last year.Topsy Turvy they call them. t Like all paying inventions, it is basically simple. Just a suspended flower pot which grow tomatoes out the bottom of a soil-filled bag and are watered from the top. Not just tomatoes, you can use them to grow other plants like peppers or cucumbers. Yet the idea is so compelling that it appeals to that section of town and city gardening enthusiast who is always looking for novelty and a chance to have a home garden without having to weed or get dirty.
No wonder then the Topsy Turvy Planter was featured in TIME magazine last year. There have been variants of course, as tradesmen joyfully pounced on the idea. The Upside Down Tomato Garden has room for more plants on top of the pot. The commercial ones feature a sponge that retains water around the roots. This solves the real problem of keeping the plant adequately watered. The Topsy Turvy sells from around upward to for the high end ones
.Welcome to America…the upside down land of tomato growers

What is a Hedge Shrub?
Posted: Aug 20, 2010 |Comments: 0
|
A hedge shrub is an important part in landscaping designs. It makes the natural ambience of a garden more meaningful and pleasing. A beautiful and well-maintained hedging instantly becomes a center of attraction and compels passersby to spend a minute on appreciating its appeal. The hedge shrub planted near a wall becomes an epitome of the true aesthetic impression. You can also make a natural fence by planting several hedge shrubs next to each other.
What makes hedging look evergreen and pleasing is their ability to be shaped as required. Use them in rounds, flowing or tapered manner as per your preferences. Some specific varieties of hedge shrubs bloom scented flowers, ripping fruits, and multi-colored leaves. By using them in a creative manner, you can create a mesmerizing and private ambience of your own. Many people prefer to plant several plants next to each other, turning them into a boundary between neighbors or direct traffic in a shared garden. However, you need to take care of the rules and regulations laid down for installing a fence in a form of hedge planting.
A Few Useful Guidelines for Hedge Planting:
• Pruning hedge plants should be done just after the wilting season of the flowers.
• Remove the old stems from the base of hedges having multiple stems.
• Evergreen hedges can be pruned throughout the year.

Privacy Screens: Leyland Cypress vs Thuja Green Giant
Posted: Sep 18, 2010 |Comments: 0
|
Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress are the most popular privacy screen trees because they are inexpensive compared to other evergreens, the two fastest growing evergreen trees, and also they do not shed lots of needles like Pine trees do. The fast growing attribute translates into less expensive purchase price. You will likely pay less for a 12 foot Leyland Cypress or Thuja Green Giant than a Norway Spruce because they did not need to cared for as long in the growers care. Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress trees both can grow three feet per year if fertilized properly.
One of the advantages of Thuja Green Giant trees over Leylands is Thuja Green Giant are deer resistant. While deer hate Thuja Green Giant as food, they really don’t like Leyland Cypress that much either. All the locations we grow Leyland Cypress we also grow Thuja Green Giant, deer are very plentiful and never damage them. There are woods and fields nearby, it is urban deer with no other food that eat on Leyland Cypress when there is trouble. They only damage smaller trees anyway, 6 foot tall and smaller.
Another advantage of Thuja Green Giant over Leyland Cypress is Thuja Green Giant are cold hardy through hardiness zone five, which includes mainland NY state, Maine, Northern CT, Mass, etc. Leyland Cypress are safe through hardiness zone six, all of Long Island, southern Mass, CT, etc. Many websites are available where you can enter your zip-code and find your hardiness zone. If you see Leylands growing in your area, that is obviously the answer that they do well in your area. One tip is if you are on the northern border of Leyland Cypress growing range, it is more important that you plant in spring because the first winter should find them partially established, or rooted. We recommend if you are north of Virginia, not to plant Leyland Cypress trees after October 15th. Almost every year, we ship a load or two after that date to Long Island and they have good success but do not plant into November and also you can expect some wind-burn on Leyland Cypress trees planted in late fall. This is usually not a big problem, the following spring I like to trim off the outer 2″ if that is how much has browned, apply slow release fertilizer around April 1, and they will push out new growth and be fine. Winter burn is not about greenery that froze to become brown, it is due to the tree not being able to send enough moisture to support the greenery during winter when the ground was frozen, leaving the outer edge of the greenery brown. Feel free to call or email us for cities and locations where we have repeat Leyland Cypress customers, like Fairfield CT, etc.
I disagree with the opinion a few have that Thuja Green Giant are much less susceptible to insects and diseases. Where I have Leylands and Thuja Green Giant growing side by side, I see that Bagworms are attracted to both trees. It is true that Leyland Cypress can develop a disease called Seiridium Canker, that does not seem to attack Thuja Green Giant, whenever I have heard of Seiridium Canker it only attacked extremely stressed Leyland Cypress trees, for example by planting way to close together and not topping them at the recommended height based on spacing. On my website is a detailed article explaining proper spacing, the zig zag pattern. Since Bagworms like both Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress trees equally, and the Leyland Cypress diseases attacks trees in extreme stress, my opinion is if Leyland Cypress are planted properly, with normal after planting care, both are excellent privacy screen trees. If you have an extreme deer damage issue, or are in zone 5, either tree will make an excellent privacy screen. a Leyland Cypress hedge will fill in quicker than Thuja Green Giant because they are fuller in the top half.

Spacing Leyland Cypress trees explained clearly. Most people who are unhappy later on with a privacy screen is the result of incorrect spacing. Plant your trees properly with target heigth in mind and consider the “zig-zag” pattern and the “rule of fours” to get closure soon and still have strong and healthy trees later.

Growing Cabbages 101
Posted: Oct 12, 2010 |Comments: 0
|
If you grow cabbage in your backyard garden, you will surely be able to save money and experience sauerkraut and coleslaw in a whole new different way, being so natural and personally made. However, growing your own cabbage is not that easy, nor is it too difficult. In order to make it easy, let me share with you some tips in cabbage growing.
All plants and crops call for care and attention. And the good news about cabbage is that they can easily thrive in both cold and hot environments. With that being said, we still need to help the cabbage grow properly so that the harvest will be bountiful. Now let us go over some things to know and remember when growing cabbages.
1. When it comes to nutrients, cabbages are heavy feeders. Ordinary healthy soil can normally do the work. There is a method that you can follow if you want a bigger and healthier cabbage. Add some organic fertilizers on the soil before planting starts. Composted manure is one example of an organic fertilizer.
2. Remove weeds or any unwanted plants carefully. This step is very important since cabbages have very shallow roots. Consider this when performing cultivation.
3. Read about crop rotation schemes in planting crops. In addition, avoid planting your cabbage near other brassicas, namely: broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprout, because of the possible disease infestation.
4. In relation to number 3, you need to understand the best time for planting. The best time for planting cabbages are during winter months. More specifically, the last three to four weeks, up to the early fall season.
5. Plant your cabbage together with tomatoes and garlic. This usually helps repel pests as well as keeps your cabbage plants healthy.
6. Five to six hours of sunlight everyday would make your cabbage thrive for sure.
Like other plants, make sure that your cabbages are watered on a regular basis, particularly when their heads are still in the process of forming. When they completely form, stop watering them to prevent the cabbage head from growing too fast and splitting.

The Different Techniques In Orchid Propagation
Posted: Jan 03, 2011 |Comments: 0

Orchid propagation is a little more difficult than propagating other types of garden plants. However, propagating orchids involves different techniques that make the process easy. There are six major techniques in orchid propagation. These are the division, back bulbs, aerial cutting, keiki, meristem and seed propagation. Two of these techniques can be done at home or in greenhouse, while two of these must be done in a laboratory to maintain the sterility of the orchids.
Orchid propagation by division is the most common as well as the simplest and the best method. Division is done by separating the original plant from the new growths, or sorting out the orchids’ roots and separating them from one another. This procedure of orchid propagation is very easy and will definitely produce a large quantity of plants. If there is new growth from the original plant, carefully cut the rhizome to separate them. If there are a lot of healthy roots, divide them so that each root contains one shoot. When each division is cared for properly, it can produce a full-sized orchid.
Another simple technique is propagating by back bulbs. This is the procedure of producing a new plant from the old back pseudobulbs with or without flowers. However, this method takes many years for the orchid to bloom a fully-sized flower. The process involves removing the old back bulbs and placing them in ideal planting places with good growing conditions to stimulate rooting.
The third technique is orchid propagation by aerial cutting. This procedure is commonly done on the Dendrobium type of orchids such as the Nobile. This technique is easy to do because the orchid is nearly fully grown before it is removed from the parent plant. Moreover, this method does not require fertilization, so the new plant will be similar to its parent plant.
The fourth major technique in propagation is the propagating by keiki. A keiki is a small plant grown on a lump along the flower which will eventually develop new branches when grown in normal conditions. Keiki’s are produced by the Phalaenopsis type of orchids.
The fifth major technique is orchid propagation by meristem or tissue culture. This technique is not common since it needs laboratory conditions to enable new growth. Laboratory conditions require extreme cleanliness and sterility of the propagating area. Without these conditions, propagation will be useless. Meristem or tissue culture is not really recommended for home or greenhouse propagation because sterility and cleanliness cannot be achieved under those conditions.
The last main technique in propagation is another method that also requires laboratory conditions. Absolute cleanliness and sterility are necessary; otherwise every attempt will be unsuccessful. Orchid seeds are similar to dust and ashes, and unlike ordinary seeds, these seeds do not have starch content which helps sustain seed growth. Orchid propagation by seed is really a special technique for developing new growths of the plant.Every technique comes with its own special methods, and these methods are the most effective means for propagating orchids. Knowing the major techniques in orchid propagation will help you know the best propagation technique that is suitable for you.

Designing Your Professional Area By Using Lush Silk Floral Collections
Posted: Jan 27, 2011 |Comments: 0

When you’re selling space to other businesses or individuals, looks are essential. That’s because these clients are also attempting to impress their own customers. If a commercial space seems drab or not maintained, you’re not as likely to find the necessary occupants. Lush silk floral collections are a fairly inexpensive method to get the look needed to win over clients without the typical maintenance hassles. Some building owners elect to maintain live plants for a stylish and sophisticated look. This decor does have an extremely distinct appearance but additionally includes its own set of headaches. Besides the constant upkeep and replacement costs, these decorations are high maintenance. Someone must water, prune, put on fertilizer, remove dead leaves, and be sure they get the proper amount of light. This involves considerable plant knowledge and time. Maintenance personnel might not have the know-how to take care of live plants which in turn makes them highly expensive. You’ll need to hire somebody that specializes in plant care. Their substantial care requirements can use up funds rapidly. Silk plants and flowers are a great alternative that cost less and supply the same desired look.
Wholesale Silk Floral Arrangements Help Make Artificial Decorating More Practical
Wholesale suppliers are a cost saver and allow for purchase of more at a lower price. Using the right provider, you’ll be able to make an industrial space look classy, inviting, and delightful. Wholesale silk floral arrangements come in quite a large variety. When bought in bulk amounts, the price of a building’s decor drops immensely. Any business can order products through wholesalers and this has an advantage when attempting to create an ideal feeling in a space. You can be more creative when designing the space without the high expense often associated with commercial decor. Wholesalers offer the same combinations associated with live plants without the drawbacks frequently related to them. They don’t have to be replaced until you want to and may easily be interchanged when needed to redesign the area. You are able to incorporate additional pieces and take away others as the visual requirements from the commercial space change. Decreased costs, low maintenance, and also many other additional benefits offered by artificial arrangements makes purchasing them a practical and wise business decorating choice.
Permanent Foliage Offers Distinctiveness and Magnificence to Any Work Space
Floral designs aren’t the sole option provided through wholesalers. Any type of permanent foliage can be added to compliment floral arrangements for a stylish new look. Simplicity might be more appealing depending on the type of clientele being attracted to the space. In this scenario, a mix of floral and plant arrangements might be more suitable. Too many floral arrangements could make an area too distracting. Various types of foliage in a space could make it more welcoming to visitors and deliver a simplistic yet stylish design. Balance is an important factor in space design. Artificial foliage providers can meet the decorating needs of any commercial space and supply the exact balance required for an ideal and unique appearance. All you’ve got to do is find a reliable provider and choose the most fitting products for your design.

When starting out with growing orchids, many beginners make the mistake of investing time and money into infant plants or even seeds. If you are new to orchid growing and are planning which orchids you’d like to buy, keep in mind that plants which have already begun to bloom will show faster results. This is important for anyone who’s never cared for an orchid because as a beginner, you will make mistakes. And if your “practicing” on a younger plant, it may never bloom, thus discouraging you to continue with this wonderful hobby.
As a beginner, you also want to make sure that you get into the habit of checking the plant carefully before leaving the flower store. There are a few things you want to inspect that will help you determine the orchid’s health. First, if the orchid’s leaves are droopy and discolored, then this is a sign of an unhealthy plant. Also, the bulbs of your orchid should always appear bloated and ready to bloom. The leaves should generally be consistent in color and the roots of the plant should be firmly potted. Next, make sure the media is somewhat moist – this is an indication that it’s been exposed to a consistent humidity climate, which is great for most orchids. Finally, the plant should have a mix of buds and blossomed flowers which will give you a longer period of fulfillment (which is why your making the purchase in the first place!).
There’s also a huge benefit to buying your orchids from established growers that sell online. This is because there is a greater variety of plants to choose from. Also, you can find more that are on the verge of budding, instead of having to wait around for the local shop to receive a new shipment. But be careful – you should make sure that you purchase only one or two orchids initially to determine your satisfaction with the quality of the plant. In most cases, the amount of money you invest will closely relate to the quality of the orchid. So make sure to do a little bit of research on the general price point for your chosen orchid. And you want to make sure the online seller is reputable. This can be determined by closely inspecting their website. Always look to see if:
a) They’ve been around for a while – look at their About Us and Contact Us pages and check to see if they have legitimate contact information (address, phone, etc.)
b) They have someone who can give you answers – don’t be timid to ask them about your particular home environment or if they have any suggestions prior to you making your purchase. People with legitimate businesses are always looking to help their prospective clients.
Lastly, when it comes to buying orchids for a wedding, it is great to know they are always in season, depending on which orchid you want to use. There are growers around the U.S. that will eagerly sell you a mass of orchid flowers if you’re looking to decorate the ceremony. This also means that you cut out third party shipping and handling costs and are able to negotiate down the per unit price of your orchid selection with the growers. Pretty handy detail, huh?

To repot bonsai, carefully lift the tree out of its current pot by tilting it to one side and trying to move it by the base of the trunk. You can not pull too hard on the trunk – so if this does not work, try tapping the pot with the side of your hand to loosen the root ball or poke a stick through the drainage holes and ‘push’ the root ball out.

Just as soon as the plant beds are set in place and the growth of plants are starting to get noticeable, make sure to go back to the sites and gather all of the pertinent information to generate the garden healthier and stronger. Tips on plant care will not be enough and there can be a desire to decorate the garden, these online sites also give great tips on how to go about this and they’ll also direct the user to the sites on where these accessories are generally bought.
