Helping Your Family Eat Healthy

Getting people to eat healthy foods can be a challenge, especially if they are picky eaters or if they have been eating unhealthy foods for most of their life. As the person in charge of feeding your family, you may be looking for ways to improve the diets of the ones you love. Without switching to feeding everyone nothing but celery and wheat germ, there are plenty of ways you can improve the diets of your family members. Begin by making sure you have a place to keep the healthy foods you buy from the supermarket and elsewhere. You should have an organized, clean pantry cabinet that offers plenty of kitchen pantry storage. Buying things in bulk can help you save and provide you with healthy alternatives at the last-minute. Be sure to stock up on safe food containers that allow you to keep foods fresh.
Next, fill up your refrigerator with plenty of fruits and vegetables that are in-season. Buying in-season foods increases the likelihood you are getting foods from nearby farms, which cuts down on the travel and the chance of getting contaminated foods. In-season foods are fresher when they arrive at your house and therefore higher in nutrients and vitamins. It is even better if you know where the fruits and vegetables were grown, allowing you to speak with the farmer and understand what he or she does during the growing and harvesting process.
There is no fresher option than growing your own, so if you are really concerned about what your family is eating, consider starting a garden. They are time-consuming and growing fruits and vegetables can be back-breaking work. However, if you are willing to commit to growing your own food, it will boost the health of each of your meals and it will save you money. Not everyone has the ability, space, or time to do this, so consider joining a farm co-op that allows you to have baskets of fresh vegetables and fruits delivered from another member’s garden each week. If you have time to grow only one type of food, consider being part of a food exchange.
Some things you have to purchase outside of the home, so when choosing proteins like meat and poultry, consider shopping for local, free-range products. Again, this gives you the opportunity to get to know the farmer and be familiar with the lifestyles of the animals you are eating. There are health advantages to choosing chickens and cows who have led comfortable lives over those who are mass-produced. Buying local, free-range meat and poultry is becoming more and more common, leading to more reasonable prices at your local market.
Finally, one of the easiest ways to help your family eat a healthier diet is to encourage sampling new foods. Make eating an adventure for kids and help them determine which foods they like. Eating nothing but junk deadens the palette, so the more foods you try, the more you will develop a taste for a well-balanced diet. Not everything needs to be health food either. Have kids try different types of sugary foods to determine which they like best, and which is worth splurging for.

Benefits of Vertical gardening

There are different types of gardening techniques that we can use. Vertical gardening is one of the techniques and is used when we haven’t much of space for gardening. Vertical gardening is way of growing fruits and vegetables and to conserve space. This technique can be used by many people even they have much of space. It helps to keep plants up off of the ground. We can give the shapes to plants that we are growing vertically. Trellis and stakes are the examples of vertical gardening. Not all types of plants can grow food by the use of this type of technique.
Vertical gardening can easily be made in the garden and I think is the best technique for the use of space of garden. The cost of land will also increase if we use the most of space of garden. We can easily construct a support for baling twine by using wooden stakes. If we want to grow fruits by vertically then Small melons are the best example of fruit that can be easily grown by vertically. We can use the techniques to give support to the melons. We can use fence to give support to melons. Nylons will help to cradle the fruit until they are ready to harvest.
Vegetables can be easily grown by using this technique. Tomatoes are mostly grown by using this type of technique. We can use containers for vertical gardening. To give support to any container, we can use stakes, cages and many other supporting devices can be used. These supporting devices can be used internally and externally according to the requirements of plants. By using a suitable support we can easily grow food by vertically. Vertical gardening is used in many situations when any plant is not suitable with normal or horizontal gardening. It is very beneficial technique for gardening in many of cases.

Tips on growing Rhubarb
Posted: Nov 30, 2010 |Comments: 0
|
There are few plants in the fruit and vegetable garden that are as prolific, versatile and as early as rhubarb and yet many gardeners still don’t grow it.
When it comes to growing fruit, rhubarb is one of the easiest and yet often most misunderstood plants. If you’ve never tasted the delights of early forced rhubarb then you really haven’t tasted the fruits of your labour, and yet to get these tender pink stems you have to jump through a few hoops. It starts in the dormant season when huge established rhubarb crowns are split or planted. So if you want to grow something tasty, productive and easy to grow now’s the time to get started.
Planting and dividing
Planting is best done in the autumn when the plants are dormant. You can either divide an existing clump or plant budded crowns. Buy large crowns from a reputable source or beg a split off another gardener who is dividing their clump this autumn. Like many perennial plants Rhubarb can outgrow its space and may need dividing to keep it productive.
If you split a crown then you want 2-3 buds per clump otherwise it doesn’t have enough energy to get going. Generally as long as your rhubarb has plenty of room to grow and is healthy there is no need to divide it. In fact if you do dig it up and divide it you will have to wait 3-5 years before harvesting again, so it is much better to choose the perfect place for the rhubarb to start with.
Cultivation tips
Rhubarb likes an open site but plants are also very happy with some shade. It’s important to prepare the soil before planting for the best results.
Rhubarb plants need really good rich ground to start them in because they are going to be there a very long time. That goes for any perennial vegetables that you grow in the garden, artichokes and asparagus, you want the ground to be well cultivated and a mulch put on because that plant is going to be there for a very long time. If you start them off in poor soil you’ll end up with a poor plant. Whatever you put into your soil you get back from your plant, your soil is your most important part of the garden.
Good Varieties
Timperley early is a popular variety because it produces early stems en masse and it doesn’t go to seed so you get all the energy diverted into making rhubarb sticks and you get a lot more rhubarb per plant. It’s a very very vigorous rhubarb.
Rhubarb connoisseurs grow champagne rhubarb, it isn’t as vigorous as Timperley early, but it is a beautiful rhubarb, it bears very tall sticks and it’s a chef’s delight, but it’s not so vigorous.

Guaranteed Annuities Are Not Always The Best Annuities
Retirees are advised to ensure they do not just accept that guaranteed annuities are necessarily the best annuities and that at retirement they should shop around to try and secure the best rates possible. Research of the alternative annuities is vital to ensure the best choice is made so income can last the whole lifetime. Pensioners are living longer than ever before and this means that income might have to last over twenty years into retirement meaning preparation is vital.

Daniels argues the new laws place undue burden on state governments. He specifically criticizes the state-based exchange system expected to be implemented in 2014 under the new laws, and he lays out reforms to the system that he and 20 other governors have endorsed in a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “If there’s to be a train wreck, we governors would rather be spectators than conductors,” Daniels wrote. “But if the federal government is willing to reroute the

The Real Costs Of Health Insurance Quotes Reform Easy To Insure ME
Foster was asked to judge claims that the health law would “hold down costs.” Foster said he thought the claim was “false … more than true.” Critics of the overhaul seized on his comments as proof that they have been right — and proponents have been wrong — about the law’s fiscal impact. It’s a legitimate argument. Unlike the controversy over death panels, the issue of how much health reform will ultimately cost is both complicated and open to honest differences of opinion. And unlike, say, the

Pennsylvania health insurance House bill targets health coverage requirement Easy To Insure ME
Pennsylvania on Monday became the latest state to consider a bill to shield itself from a key portion of the new federal health care law that will require most Americans to buy health insurance or face potential fines starting in 2014. The Republican-sponsored bill passed the House Health Committee on a party line vote, 14-9. Democrats criticized the bill as a violation of the U.S. Constitution that will do nothing to help more people afford health insurance, but committee Chairman Matt Baker,

Factors Encouraging People to Grow Food

The variety of vegetables and sometimes fruits is amazing after looking at seed catalogs and all the varieties they have to offer. Produce that is grown has such better taste than that bought at the grocery store as well as unsurpassed nutrition. This is because to grow food not only saves money but also enables people to eat better, and be healthier. To grow food, following are the requirements: pots with soil or a garden area, garden tools, such as rake, hoe, rototiller, watering can, vegetable seeds, fruit trees and fertilizer. The following guidelines should be taken into consideration to grow food: Beginning byassessing gardening situation, for a large garden spot, outdoors or a small yard or just a patio, it is possible to grow food in pots; Tilling the ground, by renting or borrowing a rototiller and tilling the ground to turn the soil, going over the garden spot several times to loosen large dirt clods and finally breaking down the earth into finer soil; Preparing the soil, raking out the large dirt clods once the garden spot has been tilled, till the soil is loose and fine textured, adding fertilizer to the soil or using organic fertilizer like compost or worm castings to enrich the soil; Preparing pots with soil, by filling plants with a layer of rocks if gardening on a patio, for drainage and then adding potting soil and fertilizer; Planting the seeds, by buying good quality seeds to grow food and following the directions on the package for when to plant in the area and how to plant the seeds; Watering the seeds by watering the garden daily to ensure the seedlings and plants get enough moisture to grow; Weeding and tending the garden, by pulling any weeds right away so they don’t steal nutrients from the plants that grow food and keeping birds and other animals away as necessary by using fences, structures that blow in the wind, etc; Harvesting food, by being sure to pick the fresh food as it’s ready so that nothing goes to waste in kitchen garden or indoor garden and eating the food right away for the most nutrition or freezing or canning it for enjoying later.
To grow food enables to save money and also gain a lot of choices. This requires a lot of planning. At first, the following factors are to be considered: Region, Soil and Space byfinding out if the area is a good spot for growing own crops or whether the region is an ideal place for growing fruits and vegetables or whether the soil in the backyard good for gardening or by ensuring that the garden is ideal for these plants or opting for an indoor garden; Climate and Rainfall, since the environment contributes much to plants, is the climate from where it is sufficient for the garden and finding out whether there is more rain than sunny weather or vice versa, and even ensuring whether it is too hot or too cold for plants; Food Crops, by learning what kind of food crops will compliment the environment around the home, familiarizing with these crops, ensuring whether these are enough for home, finding out how much time do these need to grow and the requirements of the plants besides the basic things – water, sunlight and so on; Cost, bymaking a budget plan and seeing if it complements income.

Fish Fertiliser and Seaweed Fertiliser: The Preferred Natural Organic Fertiliser of Many
Posted: Aug 11, 2010 |Comments: 0

Nowadays, it is very common for households to have their own organic garden that bear all natural fruits and vegetables. This is one way of saving a few bucks for some and for others, earning extra cash by selling their harvest. One of the most common ways of ensuring that your plants grow well is by putting natural organic fertiliser in the soil. A lot of home organic gardeners attest to the benefits of fish fertiliser as well as to the advantages of seaweed fertiliser, which they use in growing their plants.
The fish fertilisers that organic farmers and gardeners use are made from fresh fish and contain absolutely no artificial chemicals. These are perfect to use to guarantee the great condition of the soil when planting seeds of fruits and vegetables. As we all know, the quality of grown plants hugely depends on the condition of the soil on which they are planted and in turn, fertilisers help enrich the soil with nutrients essential to the growth of the seed. Years of research by experts led to the discovery of artificial chemicals that make soil more suitable for planting.
However, these discoveries are not preferred by organic farmers and gardeners since their main goal is to grow fruits and vegetables that are all natural. This is why they use either fish fertiliser or seaweed fertiliser and othernatural organic fertiliser to make the soil in their farms or gardens richer. These natural fertilisers are available in organic gardening stores. There are now commercialized organic fertilisers available in different amounts, depending on how big your garden area is. Choose a brand that has been proven to produce only high quality and certified organic fish fertilisers to be sure that you will get all the benefits expected from it.
When using branded fish fertilisers, always make it a point to follow the instructions carefully in order to get satisfactory results. Putting too much fertiliser in the soil may have a negative effect on the growing plants, even if it is all natural. In the same way, not putting enough fish fertiliser in the soil may result in plants that are way below the standard that you have set. So use your organic fertilisers in moderation to produce only high quality organic fruits and vegetables.
For those who sell their harvest, using fish and other organic fertilisers may prove to be very helpful in producing your products in huge quantities. This way you can expect more products to sell, which will definitely translate to more earnings for you. So don’t think twice about investing your money on organic fertilisers. It is the surest way to maintain the organic nature of the plants that you grow while still ensuring abundant harvest and big earnings.
Indeed you can count on the many benefits of natural organic fertiliser such as fish fertiliser and seaweed fertiliser when it comes to increasing your organic fruits and vegetables production. For sellers, you may post a sign on your store that says you are using only organic fertilisers, to assure your buyers that what they will purchase from you are guaranteed 100% organic.

Productive Fruit Trees Through Earthworm Farming
Posted: Jan 31, 2011 |
As a child, it is likely you can recall going after worms and killing them. You may have recollections of fright or repugnance regarding the tiny helpless creatures, which, as you were advised by elders, could get into your body and cause much trouble and sickness. In fact, they play a vital and significant function in what is widely known these days as biodynamic farming, or the use of organic and natural farming methods to generate agricultural products.
By now, you ought to know that earthworms are genuinely beneficial. Their appearance may prompt repugnance and fright in some people, but they’re by no means harmful. They are the celebrities of the soil, and there are numerous reasons behind this. They break down natural matter and excrete castings and slime that contain nutrients to further enhance the soil.
You can benefit from the usefulness of worms specifically if you intend to grow fruit trees. If you do this, it will save you on fertilizers and leave the job of fertilizing the earth to who else but your soil and farming buddies – worms.
If you have decided to plant fruit trees late in the sowing season, you can still achieve this, without having to wait for the following planting season. Needless to say, the soil could be hard and stiff, making it more difficult to dig and you’ll probably have a hard time digging deeply. Worse still, you might have to dig around a significant spot where the fruit tree seedlings will be planted. Do not worry. As long as there are earthworms close to, you can be spared from such tiresome actions.
All you’ve got to do is dig the site where the seedling will be implanted and put some worms into the soil. Plant the tree and voila, you can go away and just visit the plant from time to time. The earthworms will take care of loosening the earth, carrying rich nutrients from the to the subsoil and making burrows that could help further entrance and circulation of oxygen and water into the earth. As worms continue to flourish around the area, they’ll provide great natural fertilization to the fruit trees. Their excreted castings are significantly abundant with the correct nutrients perfect for development of plants.
All you’ve got to do is dig the location where the seed products will be inserted and put some worms into the earth. Plant the tree and voila, you can go away and just visit the plant from time to time. The worms will take care of loosening the earth, carrying rich nutrients from the to the subsoil and making burrows that will help further entry and circulation of air and water into the soil. As worms continue to thrive around the area, they’ll provide good organic fertilization to the fruit trees. Their excreted castings are significantly abundant with the right nutrients ideal for growth of vegetation.
If there aren’t sufficient volumes of worms in your meadows, garden or land areas designated for growing of fruit trees, you could opt to invest in earthworms grown in earthworm farming. Earthworm farming is the technology and method of artificially developing and growing worms to enhance their reproduction and growth. Such earthworms may genuinely be helpful in making you succeed in creating thriving fruit trees.

5 Reasons You Should Be Eating More Fruit
Posted: Jan 15, 2011 |
Hi everyone! For this article, I decided to talk a bit more about our diets. Specifically, I am going to talk about fruit and why we should be eating them.
It is fairly common knowledge that fruits are a good thing to eat. We all know they are good for our health, but what exactly are some of the amazing benefits from fruit? What can fruits really do for our body? Here is my list of the top 5 reasons you should be eating more fruit. I hope this list will convince you to eat more fruit. So with that, let’s get to this list.
1. Water!
Here is something that a lot of people don’t really think about. When you eat fruit, you are also consuming a lot of water. This is very important, as water intake is very important in remaining healthy. We are reminded often to drink plenty of water each day, but who says we can’t consume the water from the fruit? Eating fruit is a great way to consume your daily intake of water.
2. Fiber
In case you didn’t know, most fruits have a large amount of fiber. This is very important for our digestive system. By having enough fiber, we can avoid constipation and generally feel better when it comes to our stomach. If you make sure to eat fruit every day, you should be able to reach your desired daily intake of fiber.
3. Weight Loss
Another reason to eat fruit is the low amount of calories that fruits contain. Substituting fruit over other snacks is a great way to make sure you don’t go over your recommended intake of calories each day. If you don’t go over then guess what that means… you lose weight! Nearly every person who lose weight through a diet does so by including fruit in their diet. So why not join them?
4. Vitamins
As a kid, we were always told to take our vitamins. Often times though as we grow up, we tend to forget about taking our vitamins. However, this is where fruit can come in. Fruits contain a large amount of vitamins and minerals. So even if you aren’t taking vitamins every day, you can make up some of it with your fruit. So basically, it’s a win-win!
5. Low Cost
With the other reasons, we’ve focused on your health. However, let’s not forget about the cost! Fruits are often low cost which is a great way of saving money. In addition, you can also grow fruit in your very own backyard which will save even more money. When thinking about reasons to eat fruit, you just can’t forget about the low cost of fruit!
I really hope these reasons have convinced you to eat more fruit in your diet. Fruit can be such a valuable part of our diet. And as this list showed, besides the many health benefits, fruit can also save you money. So you have absolutely no excuse now to not eat more fruit. So start eating it!

Pruning and Training Plants
Posted: Sep 17, 2010 |Comments: 0

If you are plant loving and know much about plants and gardening then you must have come across two terms pruning and training. Pruning and training are two important process mostly used in balcony garden to fit the plants into a particular size and shape. Plants like heather and shrubby herbs are clipped occasionally to get the desired shape. Shrubs, trees and climbers are formally trained and pruned to get desired shape. Pinching top of the plants support bushy growth; lighter pruning supports more flowers and fruits and hard pruning supports vigorous growth.
Pruning Shrubs
After the flowering shrubs have bloomed, they are cut back in spring or late summer. This will make them free from dead and diseased material and is good for their growth. To avoid wind damage in winter, the stems of a pot grown rose are cut back by half after the first frost.
Pruning Climbers
Mild trimming is needed to shape the Light climbers like ivies. Vigorous flowering climbers like jasmine and honey suckle, generally don’t need any pruning, but to keep them healthy it is done to remove the dead and diseased stems. The normal Evergreen climbers are pruned in early spring while deciduous types in winter. Wisteria is pruned two times in a season, once in a mid summer and then in mid winter – cutting the side shoots by 15 cm (6 inches). Climbing rose should be cut back on the side shoots to two or three buds of the main stem. Cut back the rambling rose after first flowering completely. Clematis plants are usually grouped into different types and need variable pruning and training according to their group.
Pruning Soft Fruit Bushes
If you are willing to grow fruit bushes on a small balcony against a sunny wall or trellis, the good way is perhaps to prune a soft fruit bush into a pot grown bush or you can grow two dimensional trained effects. The new side shoots are normally pruned back to the main stem in soft fruit. For proper availability of sunlight to different parts of plants, the trees and soft fruits are grown in fan shape. Cordon and espalier needs strict pruning and training to get the horizontal forms, these forms enable them to produce maximum fruit in limited space. Some books are available in the market on gardening which describes best ways to prune and train plants and fruits.
Pruning to Achieve an Ornamental Effect
You can also provide some ornamental effects if you want with some skills and techniques. To get a topiary effect from fast growing evergreen trailers and climbers, you can train them over wire shapes. Similarly, slow growing, small-leaved evergreens like privet, yew and box, can be clipped into formal shapes. End of the summer is a good time to clip the plants.
Many shrubby or semi shrubby plants like roses, bay trees, fruit trees and fuchsias are trained into classical tall stemmed lollipop form. Different famous standards are followed in balcony containers.

How can you grow strawberries in a hanging basket ?

Hanging baskets are typically used to grow impressive flower displays but can also but used to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. As well as being a novel alternative to flowers growing fruit and veg in a basket is a very clever use of space especially when in a town dwelling.
Strawberries make an ideal fruit to be grown in a hanging basket by providing both a delicious fruit as well as some colour for visual effect. Strawberries should be planted in spring.
You will need all of the materials to hand – frame, compost, liner, strawberry and other plants, slow release fertiliser and 12″ of polythene.
Choose from the various different strawberry plants at your local nursery and aim to use 5-6 plants for a 14″ basket. You can in 1-2 other plants for decoration if you choose for the effect whilst the strawberry plants are growing.
Place a piece of polythene in the basket to act as a reservoir to aid water retention. Strawberries need to be well watered throughout and are even more susceptible to drying out in a hanging basket.
Use a multi purpose compost and fill the basket to about a third of the way up the side. It is best to add slow release fertilisers which have the fertiliser sealed in a resin shell which releases over a long period.
The basket will now be full of compost and fertiliser so dig small holes in the compost to position the strawberry plants on the top or the sides. Each strawberry plant that you use will need time and light so leave a minimum of 5cm between each plant. Water the basket thoroughly to ensure the compost is completely wet.
As with any plants the strawberries will need to be regularly watered over the summer period until they fruit.
In summary, if you follow these steps the strawberry plants will provide edible fruit and provide a pleasant and alternative display to using regular flowers.
