Crystal Roses And Rose Facts

With the perfectly clear faceted crystal found in a crystal rose, it easily picks up the light and reflects stunning prisms around any room its in. And, a single crystal rose gift couldn’t be more perfect as a lasting symbol of love.
There are a number of different types of wild roses which can be found growing throughout the Northern Hemisphere; anywhere from swampy landscapes all the way to the desert. There are two groups of roses, however, both of which grew in different places in the world, which have had the greatest impact on rose history: the Asian species and their hybrids and the European/Mediterranean species and their hybrids.
European roses are made up of Albas, Gallicas, Damasks, Damask Perpetuals, Mosses, and Centifolias while the Asian rose groups are the Chinas and the Teas. The roses of European origin bloom only once in a season per year (with the exception of one species) while the Asian rose species repeat their blooms on a continual basis. Since very early in history, the European/Mediterranean roses have been both loved and grown; in Egyptian tombs, wreaths of Damask-like roses have been uncovered while the same type of rose had also been grown in eastern Africa in holy places. Festivals that were held in both Green and Roman times included roses in them. The Romans actually developed a technology for a hot-house in which they were able to ‘force’ roses to bloom more often and, they also imported roses from Egypt.
The Damask, Gallica, and Alba roses, were all used for religious purposes during the Middle Ages; not only as decorations in holy festivals but also as part of medicinal gardens. When the Middle ages ended and the merchant class began to rise, trade in horticultural material began to take off. Thanks to their many trading ships, and the area in which they were located, the Netherlands were once (and continue to be) a major center of business for the horticultural industry. They traded in Carnations, Tulips, and Hyacinths, to name a few, and with rose trade they also developed something new: growing roses from seeds (prior to this, roses had generally been grown from cuttings). With this, the possibility of variation in roses became a reality. While not very much information is available as to how the Dutch went about the process of achieving different types of roses, it is a fact that at one time there were just 10 rose cultivars in the period up to about 1810. And, after that, one to two hundred became available with an entirely new group of roses – Centifolias – being created thanks to arbitrary breeding.
With a a crystal rose you don’t have the option of choosing a specific species of rose as you would when planting the real thing. You do, however, get to choose the color and shape (open or closed blooms) of the crystal rose – all things to be considered when giving it as a gift.

Silver Roses And Interesting Rose Facts

They’re silver plated since sterling [silver] can only be used in making jewelry and household items because of its 925 millesimal fineness (a system in which the purity of silver is measured). For example, an alloy or compound which contains 75 percent gold would be denoted as “750.”

While many of us wish a rose would last for long time, unfortunately that’s not the case. Once cut and brought into the house, roses don’t live very long at all; at best, they will withstand a few days, but not much longer than that. There are other alternatives to the real thing, which make a rose that lasts forever a reality – by dipping it in gold, silver, platinum.

In many places around the world, famous rose gardens can be found. From Australia to the United States, Canada and Europe, the beauty of the rose can be seen in all its glory in some of these stunning gardens.
In the Araluen Botanic Park, found in Victoria, Western Australia, an informal rose park was established there in 1929. In it, can be found many Tea, Chinas, and Alister Clark roses. In addition, there are also a number of rare roses such as Lorraine Lee and the climbing Contesse de labarthe.
The rose garden found at Castle Hex in Belgium was the recipient of the World Federation of Roses Garden Award in 1997. Surrounding the castle is a French-style garden which contains species of roses that have been collected from around the world. Some of these include old European roses from collections in Germany and France such as Adèl Courtoisé, De Schelfhout and Merveille des Rouges.
Bermuda boasts the Rose Society Repository Garden, which can be found by an 18th century house, first established in 1988. In it are about 85 different types of rose plants. The founder of the Heritage Rose Foundation, Dr. Charles Walker, was the one who suggested the garden be established and 2000, it was re-designed as part of the Society’s Millennium project.
The largest green space in Copenhagen, Denmark, has in it a rose garden which can be found on the edge of Valby Park. It has in it an extraordinary collection of roses that are in many forms – hybrids, trees, and wild roses. Dog-walking is very popular in Valby Park as is playing in the children’s playground. An annual rose show is held in the garden in August.
In France, in the Boise De Boulogne, Paris, can be found Odile Masquelier’s Rose Garden, called La Bonne Maison. It is located at her home which which is found on a hill overlooking Lyon and the Saône River. With 830 types of roses, in 1988, this impressive private collection was turned into an Association for the protection and preservation of heritage and species roses. It has long been a mecca for rose experts but for the most part, is not very well know to the ordinary traveller in France. This garden is featured in Secret Gardens of France, by Mirable Osler and in the book Visions of Roses by Peter Beales.
You won’t have to go very far to find silver roses; with just a few searches on the Internet, you will discover a whole host of sites catering to these hand-crafted creations. Silver roses are popular gifts throughout the year and for the discerning rose collector, they are a must have.

Rose Planting
Roses are one of the most beautiful plants that can be displayed in your garden. The fragrance is so lovely and the selection of colors can be traditional all the way to unique. In order to make sure that your roses will grow healthy and return year after year, spring and fall is the best time when to plant roses. It is a good idea to try and make sure that there will be no more frost, but if there is, you can cover your roses with a sheet or some kind of protection that will keep the frost off them. Anytime the ground is too cold and there is a potential for freezing weather, it is not a good time for planting. Here is a helpful guide of how to plant your roses in the appropriate season.
1. Locate a spot in the ground that will provide at least six hours of sun a day and soil that will provide good drainage. Roses also prefer acidic soil with a ph range of 5.8 to 6.3.
2. Make sure there is ample spacing between your roses and other plants.
3. Prune the roots of the roses by half an inch to boost growth. It is best to soak your roses in water for twenty-four hours before planting to help it with the change.
4. Dig a hole that is at least two square feet. Then you should build a small hill in the center of the hole and then arrange the roots on top of the hill. Place the roses inside the hole and put the excess dirt back in the hole. Make sure that the dirt securely supports the roses.
5. Mulch the surrounding area around the roses but leave several inches clear of mulch. Excessive mulching can cause the roses to rot.
6. Since the first several days of planting are the most crucial in producing healthy roses, you should make a small vessel of dirt around the base of the roses. This will help retain water so the roses to have plenty of moisture. The first week you should water the roses every day before sunrise or after sunset. You can start watering the roses every three days or so after the first week, depending on the weather situation.
7. When you start seeing new shoots coming out of the hill of dirt around your roses, it is safe to wash the dirt away. This is a sign of a healthy growing rose!
8. By following these steps, you will be sure to see beautiful and healthy roses growing. It will not be long before you can breathe in the fragrance of your gorgeous blooms!

Caring for roses in general will take patience and a regular schedule as most rose gardening magazines will say. Whether you have these in a rose tree garden or are taking part in organic rose gardening, caring for knock out roses while growing will be a rewarding experience.

The Black Rose ?
Posted: Jul 28, 2009 |Comments: 0

What a question, do black roses exist? Some say they are secretly being grown in Europe or a secret place in Asia. Most say no, but a few say yes. There is a rose that has been around for a lot of years called the black rose. It is a deep red color . Black roses (roses of a pure black color) do not exist in nature as far as we know.
In reality no pure black flowers of any kind exist, that we know of yet. The so-called “black tulip” is actually very dark purple . Many people confuse the two. The Black tulip is very dark , and from a little distance it does look black. Upon a close examination you see its true color.
Rose growers have been trying to grow a darker rose almost black for many years, but as far as the rose world knows , no one has succeeded.
Fake black roses, can be produced in a couple of ways. Florists can make them by using floral paint on darker roses. They are painted to look black. Also another way is to use a special treatment with special dyes and powdered flower preservative. You mix together the preservative, food coloring and water and put it in a jar. Only fill the jar an inch or two in the bottom so you have a strong black color. After being in the jar a few days , it will soak up the dye and you will have a “black rose”.
As I have said the mystery of the black rose continues. Even with the hand made varieties the meaning seems to be various. When I think of these roses, I think of bad things or death. All around the world it has different meanings in different cultures. This mystical flower is mostly associated with dark forces. But the myth still lives on today. Shrouded by more mystery and intrigue.
Some day in the future we may see a man made black rose. It could be on the horizion, but as now there, have been no true black rose breakthroughs in creating one. The roses with “Black” in their names are just a “name”, since the real black rose is really a deep red.
The Black Baccara Rose is a hybrid tea rose, and is perfect for a cut flower. Like all the black red roses, their flowers are more black looking before they are fully opened. These are some of the darkest natural roses you can find.
They appear to be more black in cool or cold weather. So if you live someplace a little colder your roses would appear darker most of the time.
So as this controversy goes on and on , as far as we know , mother nature has not ever produced a true black rose or flower. Some are close , but not true black.
But for now man can produce fake black roses threw different techniques. They are costly but they can be done.
One day a rose grower may stumble upon a variety and with a little help come up with a black rose. What a sight that will be to see. The beauty of the rose in such a color, will be truly amazing. All of us growers and gardeners wait for that day. You will go down in the history books forever being the first one in history to have a “true black rose”. What a day that will be.

Grand Gala – The Queen of Roses
Posted: Sep 03, 2009 |Comments: 0
|
Did you know that fossil evidence found in Egyptian tombs suggests that roses have been around for about 35 million years? Cultivating roses was a practice that only began five thousand years ago in China, though it did not take long for the genus Rosa to spread to the West and develop new uses besides aesthetic ones.
Ancient Romans were rather obsessed with roses – they used the red flower petals as confetti during parades and celebrations, as a source of perfume, and as ingredients for medicine. In fact, the red rose became so useful to the ancient Romans that they found ways to make these flowers bloom beyond their natural peripheries. Perhaps the beauty of Roman flowers was so captivating because around this time, people began the practice of exchanging red roses to communicate romantic love.
If you think all red roses are the same, think again.
The Grand Gala variety was quite popular in the late 90’s. However, the proliferation of more productive varieties has forced many European and American farms to stop producing this flower. In the Philippines for example, the Grand Gala outsells any other flower variety in the market. Island Rose, the largest florist in the Philippines, delivers more of this variety than any other flower in their inventory.
Red roses in full bloom symbolize a strong, mature love that has withstood the test of time and the trappings of love. For anniversaries or Valentine’s Day, send your mate a dozen Grand Gala roses. The Grand Gala rose is hybrid tea rose created in France in 1994, and its size makes this rose perfect for the task of communicating love in full blossom. This flower is one of the largest roses commercially available – the diameter of a blooming Grand Gala measures no less than five inches!
The Grand Gala’s bright, clear red color and its abundant cluster of petals makes most other red roses look pale and small in comparison. If you lean closer to inhale its scent, you’ll discover that the Grand Gala has a strong, pleasing fresh fragrance that any woman will love. This makes the flower easy to handle when making complicated flower arrangements.
Many people buy roses rather than trying to plant their own gardens. In all actuality roses are a surprising hearty and easy to grow flower.
If you are considering planting roses, don’t be discouraged by the overwhelming information and tips available to ensure the perfect flower. The rose in itself is a perfect flower and anyone can plant them and enjoy the beauty of the flower. Taking your time to choose a spot for your flowers will allow you to find the best location for planting.
The first thing to do when planting roses is to find a sunny location with good soil and drainage possibilities. After you have decided on a location for your roses you need to prepare the soil. A compost pile is simple a part of soil and some simple items mixed in.
Remove any weeds or other vegetation from your soil after you have tilled the soil. Next start adding some common household garbage from various fruits and vegetable.
After you have prepared the soil for your roses you can select the plants you want to use. You can purchase bulbs from a nursery for a small price. If you know someone who has a beautiful rose bush ask for some stems to transfer into your garden. Always remember to plant bulbs with the pointed side up, if you can’t tell for sure which side is up plant the bulb on its side and the flowers will generally find it?s own way up.
Water the area regularly and wait that is all there is needed to produce a beautiful rose garden you can admire for years to come. With regular pruning your roses can grow and spread as little or as much as you would like them too.

Easy Basics For Proper Rose Bush Care

While there are many beautiful flowers in creation, perhaps the most beautiful and well loved is the rose. Roses have been cultivated for thousands of years. In records of the oldest civilizations, there is evidence of roses in cultivation. Not limited to one locale, roses are found is almost every country.
While growing roses is a very rewarding experience, many gardeners miss out on the joy of raising roses because of the belief that they are difficult to grow. Contrary to this widespread misconception, roses can be just as easy to grow as other plants if a few simple principles are followed. You can enjoy the beauty that roses bring by learning some basic principles of gardening care.
Rose bushes do not come in just one form. There is a wide range of varieties available. No matter what type of rose bush you prefer or color or scent, and no matter the size of your garden or where you live, there is a rose bush variety that will fit your needs. By understanding the basic requirements that rose bushes need, caring for roses can be easy.
The first of those requirements is sun. The majority of rose varieties require at least six hours of unfiltered sun a day. There are also rose varieties that require less sun and are touted as “shade tolerant;” however they still require at least four to six hours of sun.
Roses also need good soil to thrive. Being heavy feeders, they need plenty of nutrients for proper growth. Poor soil can be amended with compost and other organic matter to improve the quality.
As with any type of plants, roses are susceptible to pests on occasion. The most common types of pests that affect roses are: rose midge larva, rose cane borer, thrips, Japanese beetles, stem girders, aphids, rose slugs, mites, caterpillars, scale insects, and rose chafers.
While not the most fun part of gardening, combating pests will be a necessary task from time to time. The first step is to identify the type of pest that is attacking your rose. The second step is to decide on the way you will address it. If the infestation has not spread very far, the easiest (and most economical) way is to simple remove the bugs by hand. Remove the entire leaf that is infested as there may be eggs on it. If the pests are more pervasive, you will need to take another route. Will you use synthetic chemical or use an organic solution. It is important to carefully following the directions for these products, even if they are considered organic, as they can be harmful if used improperly. Another effective method in battling pests is to place the natural enemies of the problem pests in your garden. For example, some herbs and other plants will keep pests away when planted amongst your roses. Also some bugs are actually beneficial and will eat the harmful pests, such as ladybugs and some wasps. bugs if planted as companion plants. Some bugs, such as ladybugs and some wasps, are actually beneficial and will eat the pests.
Another very important part of caring for your roses is deadheading, which is also referred to as pruning. By removing spent blooms, the rose bushes are strengthened and revived. If the flowers are not removed, the energy of the rose plant will be directed to setting seed and it will stop blooming for that season.
Many gardeners feel that a garden is not complete without rose bushes. If shown proper care, you can enjoy rose blooms from Jun until the first frost. Adding elegance to your home, rose bushes are a beautiful addition to your yard.

The Basics of Care for Miniature Roses
Posted: Sep 26, 2009 |Comments: 0

Basics of mini roses
One of the first questions I get is “Are Miniature Rose Bushes delicate and Fragile?” The Surprising answer is miniature rose bushes and the care of miniature roses bushes, are very similar to that of the regular-sized rose bushes. They are actually pretty hardy.
Sunlight
Miniature Roses require a full 6-8 hours of good sunshine per day. They can survive with a bit less sun, but this will affect the way and how much they bloom. Like the larger rose plants, the less sunlight they have, the less they will bloom, in an aspect type ratio.
An example is if they need 8 hours of sunshine to produce 8 blooms, and they only get 6 hours of sunshine, then they will only bloom 6 times, instead of 8. This can have a huge effect on commercial rose crops as a reduction in light can mean a large flower production drop.
Feeding
For feeding I generally do a spring feeding with a good compost to give the soil a good boost of nutrients. When the first flower buds start to show I will then use a good organic food such as fish emulsion. I do this to provide them with an “extra” push to help flower production. I don’t use chemical fertilizers because these tend to strip away the beneficial flora in the soil and kill the microorganisms that help the plants.
Watering
I like to recommend watering of roses in inches, so a good 1 to 1.5 inches of water every week is good and what I give. The way I measure in inches is with a very inexpensive rain gauge that is found at the garden shop. I put it next to one of my rose bushes and then water it. When the water hits 1-1.5 inches I am done.
Once I get a good feel for this I can then generally eyeball the amount of water I give them each time. I don’t over water either, roses hate being saturated and standing in puddles of water.
Another way I figure out watering is to have the base of the rose in a circular valley or dirt moat. I fill the valley up with water once if it is 2 inches deep and let it drain. I do this one more time and then I am done watering for the next couple of days. That is how I water.
Soil
Roses, especially in pots, need to be put in good soil. Clay based soil is ok for roses, so is your average garden potting soil. Sandy soils are generally not good unless you are really vigilant and keep an eye on watering and maintaining good water levels. Letting a rose dry out will halt flower production and growth screeches to a halt.
Even if you decide to use sandy soils and use a lot of water it, a rose will not tolerate standing water for any length of time, and as an aside, this is not a good pond-side plant.
Pruning
So you just bought a new miniature rose plant and it’s covered with flowers, the first thing you want to do is prune it. First seek out and carefully prune back the old wilting or just fading roses. This should leave you with a small round bush or mound of canes.
Canes are what the branches of the rose bush are called. So try to manicure this to a well rounded shape with the center of the bush being slightly taller than the outer areas. If you have a choice in your cuts, definitely cut or “prune” so that an outward facing bud is at the top of the cane. If you don’t see one, don’t worry, later you will have one but for now just prune and shape.
Overwintered Roses
The period of time a rose goes through winter is called “Overwintering”. If you’ve gone through an overwinter with your roses and not sure what to do next, take a pick of 5-8 of the best, healthiest and thickest canes and prune away the rest. We want to focus the rose’s energy on feeding the best of the bunch and not the smaller ones.
If you’ve rooted a new bush from a cutting, don’t prune except to remove flowers before they start bloom. We want the energy to be put into root and leaf production, instead of blooms, this insures the new cutting will survive the season and have a better chance of staying the long haul.
Once it’s in its second year, then we’ll pruning the miniature roses as stated in the previous paragraph. An aside is that it might not throw too many canes in the first year but each year it will get larger and larger.
Since miniature roses are not grafted as the large varieties are, and are grown on it’s own root stock, canes that come from below ground are not a problem and can be left to grow. These canes will flower normally but also insure the growth of the root system. If these new grown canes are part of the 5-8 strong canes described in the previous paragraph, it is ok to leave them.
With these basic tips on the miniature rose bush, almost anyone can maintain a beautiful and healthy miniature rose garden. Miniature roses are in a class all by themselves as they are small and tiny, and have definite following all their own amongst Rosarians.
Raymond Reynolds has been growing roses for more than 20 years in San Diego. For more great tips on growing Roses, please see his website at http:www.rosebushcaretips.com

Though at first one might think that these are fragile plants, what with their being miniature and all, whereas it’s the other way around as they’re one of the hardier plants of the rose variety.

Roses are one of the most popular flower species in the world. Fossil evidence tells us that the rose is around 35 million years old. However the cultivation of roses in gardens is fairly recent. It began about 5,000 years ago in China. Roses are surrounded with mystery and romance connected to their lore. More than 150 species of roses have been found in nature and countless cultivars developed from them. Growing roses is easy with a little understanding of their life cycle.

Ten Easy Steps to Excellent Rose Care
Posted: Oct 21, 2009 |Comments: 0

Itâs no good just planting roses and hoping for the best, roses need to be looked after like the ladies they are. It is important to maintain them and ensure they stay as healthy as they can possibly be. If you look after your roses, they will reward you with their presence. Here are ten easy steps to excellent rose care which cover everything you will ever need to know in making sure your roses are happy.
Step One â Buying
You need to make sure the roses you choose for your garden have been looked after well before you buy them. Plants that havenât been pruned should have at least 3 18 inch canes with a diameter of no less than ¼ inch at the top. Rose enthusiasts prefer buying rose plants in tar paper pots because they can be transplanted at any time of the year.
Step Two – Planting
When planting your roses, you need to make sure you select a sunny and well drained location. Start by trimming away all broken and bruised roots and then cut the top growth back by 6-8 inches. The hole you dig to put the plant in needs to be 6 inches deeper than the depth of the roots and the roots should have enough space not to be crowded. A very effective way of facilitating drainage for your roses is by placing pebbles or small rocks in the bottom of the plant hole.
Step Three – Soil
The rocks and pebbles that you have added for drainage should be covered with soil mixed with 1 tablespoon of fertilizer. Once you have done this, you should then cover the fertilized soil with plain soil bringing the level up to the required planting depth. It is important to firm the soil slightly 2 or 3 times to eradicate any air pockets.
Step Four â Feeding
The first feed for your rose should come in early spring or as soon as the leaf buds begin to swell. Plant food can be bought in any garden center and should be weaved into the soil around the rose. You will need to use 1 tablespoon of fertilizer per rose plant. The second feeding comes immediately following the first heavy bloom and the third feeding should be made in the late summer. If you live in a northern area it is best not to feed after the middle of August.
Â
Step Five â Summer
Water is a basic need the rose plant cannot live without and the summer months take their toll on plants drying up under the raging heat of the sun. You will need to water generously in hot weather.
Step Six â Mulching
If you want to keep those nasty weeds at bay then try mulching your rose plant in the summer months. This will reduce the loss of moisture from the soil and supply your rose with nutrients and protection against the sun.
Step Seven â Diseases
One of the most common reasons rose growers fail to produce healthy roses, is because of the pests that view your lovely roses as fast food. Garden centers are bursting with insect repellents and pesticides to help protect your rose from harm. A less toxic way of protecting your rose is to dust it every ten days, which is proven to stop pests lingering around for a bite to eat.
Step Eight â Pruning
Pruning follows a few basic rules for success.
a)Â You need to remove all wood killed or injured during the winter months.
b)Â You donât need to keep the weak and lifeless growth; it only acts as baggage that wonât benefit the rose in any way.
c)Â Try to remove as little healthy wood as possible.
d)Â Hybrid roses should be cut back to between 18 and 24 inches. Ramblers need to be pruned just after they have bloomed.
Step Nine â Winter Protection
It is the cold and the heat that can kill off a rose. From boiling to freezing then back again acts to sever the roots and cause the plant to die of starvation. Many rose enthusiasts in the winter months wrap the roots with a bag, like a coat to protect from the harsh winter temperatures.
Â
Step Ten â Enjoy Your Roses
After maintaining your roses it is important to sit back and enjoy the results of your efforts. You can watch the red lady dancing in the breeze lighting up your garden.

Ten Easy Steps to Excellent Rose Care

Almost nothing in bonsai is immediate. Expect your trees to develop over years, even decades. It may be ten years or longer before your plant will actually be a “bonsai.” Don’t be discouraged by this, but think of it as part of the experience.

To repot bonsai, carefully lift the tree out of its current pot by tilting it to one side and trying to move it by the base of the trunk. You can not pull too hard on the trunk – so if this does not work, try tapping the pot with the side of your hand to loosen the root ball or poke a stick through the drainage holes and ‘push’ the root ball out.
