Roses are a sign of love and friendship and by giving someone a rose you are telling them how truly special they are. There are a number of colors of roses available and each one represents a different meaning to the receiver. If you are looking to purchase roses for that special someone, but aren’t quite sure which color would best suit your relationship, keep reading to find out what each color represents.

Red – Red roses are a sign of love, beauty, courage and respect. This color represents romantic, sincere and passionate love. If you want to show your loved one that they are the love of your life, red roses are the ones to choose. Giving a single red rose to someone is a simple way to say “I love you”.

White – White roses are a sign of purity, innocence, silence and youthfulness. They are given to individuals who are shy about love and are used to tell the person how special they are. White roses can also be used in weddings as an indication of new love which is just beginning.

Pink – Pink roses are a sign of appreciation and are often given as a thank you. Pink flowers also represent happiness and admiration and are given to someone you love whether it be a significant other or a best friend.

Yellow – Yellow roses are a sign of friendship, happiness, joy and promise. Yellow roses are often given to show happiness for loved ones who are returning from a long trip or leave of absence.

Orange – Orange roses signify desire and enthusiasm. They can be given at a graduation or a commencement to celebrate the ending and beginning of two different phases in life.

Lavender/Purple – Lavender or purple roses are a sign of love at first sight. If you just meet someone and have fallen head over heals for them, show them how you feel by giving them lavender roses.

Regardless of the color of roses, they represent love and friendship among many other wonderful things. Roses can be planted in your garden or kept in vases throughout your home. If you are growing roses in your garden follow this gardening tip to ensure you receive the best results possible:

Pruning Your Roses – Using pruning shears, trim your roses around the edges and remove any dead leaves from the plant. Cut out any dead wood, twigs or stems which are cross-growing over one another. Pruning should be done twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to ensure your roses are kept in top condition.

Where you decide to plant your roses and the kind you choose will affect the overall appearance of your garden. Roses are quite possibly the most popular flower to show love and happiness and anyone who receives a rose for any reason should consider themselves a very lucky person.

Early spring is a great time for transplanting trees and shrubs, but you must do so before they wake up. Transplanting a plant is a very traumatic experience for the plant if it is awake. It’s like doing surgery on a person while they are awake. Dormancy starts in the fall as soon as you experience a good hard freeze, and the plants remain dormant until the weather warms up in the spring. Transplanting Roses For Newbies

Edit Article |

Transplanting roses is easy and this article will show you how. But is it is important to keep a few things in mind because without your roses will suffer greatly. When approached properly the whole transplanting process will be a success and your roses will be back to producing their stunning flowers.

So now to these key points laid out for you in 5 quick easy steps:

Step 1 – Site Preparation. Prepare the rose plants to be moved by thoroughly watering them for about 4-5 days prior to transplanting, water preferably in the morning. By doing this you will minimize the shock the roses experience during the transplanting and subsequent re-establishing. When watering always make sure to water directly into the ground and not on the rose itself so that bush doesn’t become prone to fungus or disease later.

The new planting site can be prepared by working in some compost or broken down horse manure into the soil. Dig a hole of about a foot deep and a foot and a half wide. Ensure that the hole is large enough to fit the bush’s root ball comfortably. Make a little mound in the hole on which to set the rose. To improve fertility add a bit of compost or bone meal to the bottom of the new hole.

Step 2 – Prune. Before commencing the actual transplanting process it is a good idea to trim any unwanted growth from the rosebush. Not only will it give you the chance to adapt the shape it will also allow the roots to concentrate on establishing the plant in its new location rather than trying to support a lot of growth. In fact if you want to do your rose a real favor trim it back hard as this will limit transplanting stress.

Step 3 – Digging a hole. Dig deep down about two feet and in three to four feet circumference around the plant with a spade. Slowly remove the root ball and carefully cut little stray roots without inflicting too much damage to the root system. Collect as much soil and roots of the rose. Once out of the soil completely, wrap the root ball in a piece of burlap or damp towel to maintain moisture levels while out of the soil. Now take it to its new planting ground before it dries out.

Step 4 – The actual transplant. Slowly place the rose plant and soil mass into the hole, make adjustment to the hole if necessary. Then, add a small amount of the soil mixture and press it down gradually but firmly around the rose plant’s root ball. Water the rose plant thoroughly. Keep adding more of the soil mixture around the rose until the soil in the hole is almost level with the surrounding ground. Water the rose plant extremely well so that it takes the water a minute or so to properly drain from the surface. Tidy up the area around the rose plant and add a layer of mulch.

Step 5 – After Transplant. After a successful transplant, continue to water the rose plant daily. This much needed water is essential for new growth and plant establishment. Use an organic anti-fungal spray to protect the newly transplanted rosebush while it still establishing itself. Once new growth starts to appear get ready to fertilize with some organic fertilizer such as compost or seaweed liquid.

And there you have it, 5 fairly straight forward steps that anyone who grows roses or is thinking about starting a rose garden really needs to know about. Indeed, how to transplant roses is part of basic rose bush care knowledge. Wishing you many strong rose bushes, after successfully transplanting them, that produce vigorous, magnificently flourishing rose blooms for you and your family to enjoy.

For generations, rose tree gardens have been a showcase of beauty and sophistication for aristocrats and the wealthy. But these days, rose trees can be found adoring the garden of many rose garden enthusiast. However, starting a rose tree garden, unlike many other rose varieties gardens, may tend to be too demanding to venture into for a casual gardener as it requires time and careful attention. It is important to carry out comprehensive research on the subject not only to ensure being successful at establishing your rose tree garden but also to realize what is involved.

Rose trees, also known as rose standards, really are not trees at all but climbing or bush roses. They have been grafted to look like a tree by adding in an extra length of trunk which makes them resemble a miniature tree. Because a rose tree consists of 2 or more rose varieties they have some special care requirements. It would be wise to choose to plant only one rose tree, that alone will be a really wonderful addition to your garden, and then to decide whether you really want to plant more.

The basic planting procedure is much the same for a rose bush as for a rose tree except for the depth of the hole. To summarize; ensure the rose tree is thoroughly watered before starting. Prepare a large hole in the ground with that has good loose soil at the bottom and is plenty deep enough for the root ball of the rose tree, 19 inches deep, 2 feet wide should do it. The plant will benefit from the addition of good compost or composted manure so make sure to put some in the hole and around the roots. Plant the rose tree deep into the ground and water regularly giving the roots time to settle in.

As rose trees are very susceptible to being damaged by frost or sudden changes in the weather it is wise to employ mulching the whole area around the rose tree. A fairly thick layer is required and this will also keep the moisture in when the roots are establishing themselves. Beware that frost protection requires more than just mulch in temperatures below freezing.

Pruning to keep the top from getting too heavy is important next to the normal rose pruning that is common for all roses. And as the rose tree is so tall and only has a fairly slender stem it needs staking to withstand high winds.
Do not use wire to fasten it to the support as it will cut into the trunk, an old rubber inner tube works well.

If you are willing to put in the work and do the research having a rose tree garden is highly recommended as it is definitely a true rose grower’s specialty. For those gardeners who are not sure if it is for them, plant one just to have the experience and especially for the beauty. After all a rose tree is quite a sight to behold and will be a good addition to your garden.

Yearly Rose Care

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 04, 2011 |Comments: 0

Some rose care needs to be performed all year long in order to keep your roses looking beautiful. Even one or two rose bushes, a rose tree, or a full garden of roses in your yard needs to be attended to year round. You probably planted those roses because of their beauty and color and caring for them during the year will keep them that way.

Rose suckers, once you have found them, should always be removed from your plants. Rose suckers are shoots that come from below ground level and are from the rootstock and come from under the point of union. They are generally identified by the thorns and leaves as they are different from those that grow on top. The leaflets on a sucker are thinner than the leaflets on the actual rose and the thorns are much more like a needle. It has always been known that there have been 7 leaflets per leaf on a sucker and the leaves above the point of union just have five, but this is not always true.

When you deadhead your roses it will encourage them to create more flowers. If your hybrid tea blossoms wither cut them with a pruning shears just above a healthy shoot or a leaf bud that is facing outward. This entices your rose to flower once again. Some growers will cut back to the first leaf containing five leaflets but by doing this you might lose possible flowering stems. Near the close of the season deadhead lightly and just to the first leaf bud below the flower; you want to discourage new growth that will not harden before winter sets in. In cold climate zones, in the fall, clip off all flowers with short stems. You need to be very harsh when deadheding Floribunda roses. There are no leaf buds on the blossom stems so the whole flower truss will need to be cut back to below the first leaf bud.

By removing some of the flower buds from hybrid teas you can induce the flowers that are remaining to grow larger. When new stems start growing on the hybrid teas, side buds could start appearing under the terminal bud. While these side buds are still small, snip them between your fingers to about six inches below the terminal bud.

The quality of your soil and the weather conditions in you particular area will determine when to water your roses. Sandy soils will require plenty of water. Roses will be able to handle a 2 or 3 week drought in most other types of soil, except for rose that have been newly planted. Roses always do much better if you water then with a soaker hose or a drip system; these methods give water basically around the roots. If you water roses from above you could cause damage to blooming plants. If your plants are not blooming you can use sprinklers that only give off a fine mist spray of water. It is better for all plants to water early in the morning so they will have time to dry before the day ends. Watering that splashes soil or dirt on the leaves can spread soil-borne diseases.

You can spray roses with a general-purpose insecticide-fungicide that is equipped with a tank type pressure sprayer that produces a fine mist particularly made for roses. Spraying can begin early in the growing season and the process can be repeated regularly according to the instructions on the package.

You should not feed any roses during their first year of planting. Once the first year has passed you can start feeding as early as February in mild climates areas and as new growth begins in the cold climate areas. Feeding again after a blooming period will prompt the next blooming period. Roses should not be fed after August in cold climate areas. When the ground begins to warm up in the spring you can place up to a 4 inch cover of mulch to help retain moisture, keep the weeds down, and improve the soil around your roses.

A 24K Gold Rose Lasts A Lifetime

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 12, 2011 |Comments: 0

What other treasure can surpass the excellence of a 14k gold rose? A 24k gold rose of course. A 24K gold rose is a favorite choice of gift and/or souvenir.  Although roses outsell most other flowers on the market, unfortunately they don’t last forever. However, with a 24k gold rose, that is no need to worry. Gold roses pass through a process of 40 stages then they are handled by artisans; finally they look as beautiful as the genuine thing but without the maintenance needed for caring for the flower growing in your garden.

Extraordinary symbolism has always been attached to the rose. For hundreds of years they have represented both love and beauty. Roses were made the national flowers of both England and America and they are also the beloved symbol for England Rugby and the Rugby Football Union. Additionally, both the red and the white roses are the provincial flowers of Yorkshire and Lancashire in England. The wild pink rose was selected by young  children in 1930 as the official flower of the province of Alberta, Canada. New York, Iowa, North Dakota, and Georgia have also proudly claimed  the rose as their state flower.

A 24k gold rose is the exact duplicate  of  the beautiful  flower itself  preserved forever  in the most  precious metal that will  last longer than a lifetime. Roses can represent many things, such as feelings one can’t say easily out loud, but it can also be given as a gift to acknowledge a birthday or an anniversary. In addition to that, 24k gold roses can easily be presented to someone who enjoys the flower and wants to have them all year round (particularly those living in cold climates). You can get 24K gold roses as flowers in bud or bloom. You can combine different varieties if you want and end up with a beautiful  bouquet. Roses are viewed as being in the  top ten on the list of gifts women prefer and given in gold, you are spot on.

Because gold is often viewed as a luxury that most can’t afford, a 24k gold rose, like gold jewellery, it is an investment into something you can adore and treasure for ever. With the combination of two very precious commodities, roses dipped in 24k gold; they don’t need to be given the care which is required for a rose garden. Long after  all the roses have stopped blooming for the season, you will still have the joy of being able to admire your unblemished 24k gold roses right in your own home.  You can use them to beautify one room or the entire house – the possibilities are limitless.Though it seems peculiar to spend more money on a 24k gold rose when you can purchase the real thing for less, it is wiser, because in just a few days, the fresh rose will wilt and die while the 24k gold rose will stay alive for a lifetime.

Gold Jewellery – Should I Buy 9K or 24K?

Most of us understand jewellery at an emotional level … we understand how it makes us feel, but little about how it is made and the materials it is made from. In fact, it is common and natural for us to judge a piece of jewellery more by its price tag (with cheaper jewellery being less desirable and more expensive jewellery being more desirable) than by all those confusing numbers!

The Message A Rose Sends

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 12, 2011 |Comments: 0

When someone purchases a rose, they are not just acquiring a flower: they are communicating their deepest emotions.  Purchasing a rose of any color takes a lot of time and deliberation.  Giving or sending the wrong color rose can cause a whole host of problems particularly if you meant one thing but chose a rose color that meant something totally different. For example, if an individual that has been a lifelong friend with no romantic attachments to you whatsoever is given a red rose [by you], they may think you are conveying  feelings of love, which is what red roses symbolize. If you want to send the right color, buy a yellow rose  instead, as that will send a message of joy and friendship.

When we select a rose we are quite likely to be unaware of its long history. Wild rose plants were said to have grown on the hillsides on the islands of Crete and Greece, allegedly millenniums  before Christ was born. It is alleged that it was the Chinese and the Egyptians who first selected plants based on the color of their flower. Roses and images of roses have both been found in the tombs of ancient Egyptians like Tutankhamen. In both the hanging gardens of Babylon and in Jerusalem at King Solomon’s temple, rose plants were found growing. Also during medieval times, Monks and apothecaries grew wild roses for their medicinal values. Finally, as this era came to a close, spectacular rose gardens began showing up at castles, chateaux’s and manor homes.  Eventually, by the end of the Roman Empire, wild roses were being grown all over Europe. And it’s no surprise–because nothing quite equals their beauty.

As with anything that has existed for a long time, when we purchase a rose, it’s nice to know the story about what we’re buying. Over the last five decades, no other flower has exceeded the rose in terms of its popularity. On every exceptional occasion, especially Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, our first thought is to buy a rose – or even a bouquet.  Although there are many varieties of flowers just as enchanting, none seems to come quite as close to the charms or aroma found in the classic rose.  Although the majority of us would enjoy nothing more than to have our own rose gardens, they require large-scale care along with just the most suitable conditions for growing; if those are not available, your roses won’t bloom. It’s essentially for this purpose that it’s sometimes less challenging to go out and purchase a rose instead.  With the acquisition of a rose, you may still bask in  it’s elegance as well as anyone who has their own rose garden.

A golden rose is not what you might think; it’s actually a real flower – a rose – that has been preserved forever in gold. A golden rose can be trimmed in gold, or dipped entirely in the precious metal; it’s a special keepsake that can be treasured, displayed, and remembered for a lifetime.

By the time the 1800s had rolled around, most of the Chinese roses (which is where roses originated), had made their way into Europe. In 1837, a hybrid perpetual rose (a cross between a Bourbon rose and any other kind of parent species of the flower) was introduced by way of France. It was a hybrid that found its ancestors in the damask, cabbage, tea, noisette, China, and Bourbon roses. This particular rose was very tough, producing large, fragrant flowers. While the original hybrid perpetuals were pink, once crossed with the Bourbon rose species, the red coloring [found in the Bourbon], forever turned up in the line.

Until the turn of the century, hybrid perpetuals remained popular, but were eventually overshadowed by the hybrid tea rose, which was considered a far superior flower. Unfortunately, only about 50 varieties of these roses can be bought today as most of the original creations were lost. At one time, there had been more than three thousand varieties of this flower which had been hybridized during what was referred to as “the golden age of roses.”

When the hybrid perpetual rose was crossed with the tea rose, it produced a hybrid tea that was much more dependable in terms of blooming qualities than that of its ‘parent’ hybrid. In 1867, the very first hybrid tea rose, called ‘La France’ was first introduced. In 1893, the hybrid tea class of roses was formally recognized by The National Society of Great Britain. Since that time, it has become one of the most popular types of roses today.

As far as rose breeding was concerned, with the creation of the hybrid tea a new era had begun for these beautiful and popular flowers; before 1867, every type of rose produced was called an ‘old garden rose,’ and anything new created after that year was referred to as a ‘modern rose.’

The beauty of a golden rose is not only that it’s a stunning, hand-crafted creation, but it’s also a unique gift that can be used to celebrate an all important relationship (just as fresh-cut roses do). A dozen 24K golden roses are worth every penny for that special someone.

Silver Roses And Interesting Rose Facts

Silver roses are never made with sterling silver, despite popular belief. They’re silver plated since sterling [silver] can only be used in making jewelry and household items because of its 925 millesimal fineness (a system in which the purity of silver is measured). For example, an alloy or compound which contains 75 percent gold would be denoted as “750.”

Roses That Last Forever

Edit Article |

When one receives a rose, the hope is always that it will last forever. Unfortunately, the real thing doesn’t last long especially when they are fresh cut. If you are lucky enough to live in a place that is warm year round, a forever rose garden is a distinct possibility.

Given how time consuming and difficult it is to grow roses, not to mention their short shelf life after they have been cut, opting to buy roses made of materials like crystal, gold, silver, and porcelain, is another way to keep a gold rose that lasts forever.

The transformation of the rose flower from the wild plant it started out as to the 30,000 varieties that exist today, is quite remarkable. A gold rose lasts forever is a fitting title for a flower that has been around for 35 million years. Experts today tend to divide roses into two groups: ‘old roses,’ which were cultivated in Europe prior to 1800, and ‘modern roses’ – cultivated in both England and France around the turn of the 19th century. Up until the beginning of the 19th century, the only color roses were found in were various shades of pink and white. The red rose was first introduced by China in 1800. A few decades later, green roses began to exist. Yellow roses became part of the rose color palette in 1900. They were discovered by accident by Frenchman Joseph Permet-Ducher. He had been cultivating roses for twenty years and in that time had searched desperately for yellow roses. While in a field one day, he came across a mutant yellow flower and both yellow and orange roses have existed ever since. It seems fitting that a forever rose of yellow coloring means joy and gladness – Mr. Permet-Ducher likely had these very same feelings after his chance discovery.

Every year, on every holiday, or occasion, gifts tend to come and go. The gift of a gold rose that lasts forever, is a memory for a lifetime, given the sentiment roses invoke. From the ancient civilizations of Greek and Rome, roses have been used to express feelings of love for thousands of years. The same stands true today. The rose has also represented love in music, literature, and poetry – it’s no wonder they are referred to as the ‘Queen of Flowers.’

A gold rose that lasts forever is unsurpassed in its beauty and given there are 50 colors to choose from, you can never go wrong when picking one (or two or three). If you live in a place where snow blankets the ground for much of the year, as the seasons change, choose a different forever rose to display in your home to commemorate the transition. It can serve as a reminder that summer is not so far off and that soon enough, roses will once again be in bloom.

Rose Gold Dipped Flowers

Rose gold dipped flowers are popular choices of gifts over the fresh cut variety. If for nothing else, a rose gold dipped flower will last a lifetime compared to a just a few days for a flower that is removed from the garden and put in a vase.

With so many varieties of roses to choose from, how do you know what will work best in your garden? By doing some research into the different types of roses available, it will give you a better idea of where to begin.

Centifolia roses are also called ” Cabbage Roses” because their blossoms are distinctly shaped like a cabbage. They are usually pink in color and very fragrant with plants ranging in height from four to six inches. The blossoms are generally so heavy, they cause the plant’s branches to tip over under their weight. The history of the Centifolia rose has been much debated as it has been reported that the flower cane from wild roses that were once growing in Europe and Asia. Dutch masters often featured them in their paintings.

Damask roses (the name refers to Damascus, Syria) are from ancient times and are known mostly for their incredible smell. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘Rose of Castile.’ Damasks are hybrid roses which were made from crossing the species Rosa gallica with Rosa moschata. These roses can grow up to 7 feet in height and have dense, curved prickles. It is believed that the flower was brought from Persia to Europe by crusader Robert de Brie sometime between 1254 and 1276.

Within the old garden rose family/category, we find the Hybrid Gallica rose – the oldest of the “bred” roses in this family. They were a very popular rose in the 1700s through to the first half of the 1800s. Hybrid Gallicas bloom only once and have thorns which are fine to hair-like. They grow to four feet in height and have rough leaves with full, fragrant blooms. Gallicas come in the colors white, red, mauve, pink, crimson, and purple, in addition to blends [of these colors].

Hybrid tea roses are the ones that produce the roses with long stems. During their growing season, they grow individual blossoms and will flower over and over. They were created by cross-breeding two different types of rose. Hybrid teas are long, upright and straight, and grow up to six feet in height. Each bloom on a hybrid tea rose can be up to 5 inches in diameter. Because of the way in which their flowers form as well as their color, Hybrid tea roses are one of the most popular flowers, in particular as cut flowers.

So as to avoid the confusion and even the research required to plant a rose garden, a rose gold dipped flower makes it that much more simple to choose. All that’s required when picking out a rose gold dipped flower is decide on a color, a metal (24K gold, silver or platinum), and whether you prefer the flower bloom open or closed; perhaps you can even choose a mix of the two.

A Dipped Rose

Edit Article |

A dipped rose is made from a real flower that goes on to be preserved and covered in gold, silver, or platinum. It can be purchased with its blooms fully open or closed and includes the stem and leaves. Different colors of dipped roses can also be chosen if the coloring of gold, silver, and platinum isn’t of interest to you.

While there are many species of roses, there are some which are more well known than others; the Damask rose, the China rose, and the Tea rose.

Damask roses were developed in Asia from the hybridization between Rosa Gallica and Rosa Phoenicia. They were first distributed through Syria, the Near East, and Middle East. According to tradition, it was the Crusaders who were responsible for bringing it to Europe from Damascus (hence its name) in 1254. Despite that, there is a still a veil of mystery that surrounds the true history of this rose. There are references in the 1820s to the “common Damask,” but it’s unclear what the author at the time was really referring to. Damask roses are considered the original old fashioned rose and can still be found growing in the wild today around Morocco, the Middle East, Andalusia, and Caucasus.

Long before the western world knew anything about China roses, they were being grown in Chinese gardens. They are bred from Rosa chinensis and as to when they made their first appearance in the west is under dispute; Sweden, Italy, and Britain, all claim to have had them first. Commerce of both a red China rose and a pink one began in the West in 1790s with breeding getting under way very quickly in both France and Italy. China roses became popular fast thanks to their continuous bloom in addition to a fascination for all things Asian at the time. Their worst trait is their lack of hardiness to the cold. China roses make bushy plants that range in color from deep red and maroon to pink and white. Those that have been hybridized with Tea roses are also yellow, salmon, orange, and saffron in color.

Tea roses get their name from the scent of their blossoms which has been described as “a newly opened sample of the choicest tea.” While their ancestry is not certain, they are  supposed to have been created from Rosa Chinenisa x and Rosa gigantea. The first two cultivars of Tea roses was introduced to the West by Britain in 1810 and 1824. Not long after, the French began to hybridize them. To many rose experts, Tea roses have the most exquisite color and form compared to all rose species in existence.

When the French hybridized them however, they came across bushes which produced blossoms that were very weak and which were easily damaged depending on the weather. As a result, some people took to growing them as greenhouse plants while still others tried to improve the altogether by cross breeding them. There were some interesting results produced including the Bourbon rose which turned out to be large, thick-limbed shrubs (unlike its predecessor) that had very healthy and beautiful foliage.

Since fresh cut roses only last a few days at best, a dipped rose offers the choice of having them forever. While you have to wait around for spring and summer for the next blooms of roses to take place, a dipped rose will be in ‘bloom’ for a lifetime.
