Taking Care of Yourself and Your Lawn! Lawn Care Safety Tips!

Summertime comes around the same time every year. As it rears its head, the grass starts to grow, and weeds begin to infest the lawn. It is time to take out the lawnmower and the weed eater and begin sculpting the lawn. However, landscaping can be a dangerous activity if safety precautions are not taken.
The first step to making sure that your lawn care is accomplished safely is to inspect the lawn for anything that can become tangled in the blades of the lawnmower. This includes things like toys, sticks, dog feces, rocks, or anything else that could be flung at you while mowing the lawn. At the same time, you should also be certain that pets are out of the way. When mowing the lawn, it may be warmer than desired; however, you should still wear long pants if tolerable to help protect your legs from any debris coming off the mower. Never mow barefoot, and avoid sandals. Use supportive sneakers or some form of enclosed shoe to help protect your feet.
Goggles are a good idea; any pieces of dirt or grass flying up into your face could scratch your eyes, so it is best to protect them. This is especially true if you are trimming or edging. Before beginning, you should consider the damage the sun can inflict. Be sure to wear a proper amount of sunscreen and perhaps a hat to help shield you from the ultraviolet rays. Be sure to hydrate yourself, as you will be sweating and losing precious fluids while you work. Landscaping is a hefty undertaking, even at minimal effort, and it can severely dehydrate an unprepared individual.
Check the fuel tank of the lawnmower prior to beginning it’s never a good idea to fill the tank when it is hot from use, and you should not have gas cans close to the exhaust pipe when warm, as fumes could ignite. Never try to unclog a lawnmower without first turning it off and disconnecting the spark plug. It is possible for some models to start upon rotation of the blade, even if the power is off. This poses a serious danger to digits and limbs that can easily be avoided by taking the proper precautions.
Never pull the lawnmower toward you, and never leave it or any other tools running while unattended. If you find that you need to trim or weed eat an area above the head, do NOT use a typical weed whacker or hedge trimmer. Use a cherry picker. If the cord becomes tangled, be sure to disconnect power before trying to untangle it.
Overall, landscaping and lawn care can be an enjoyable experience. Many people enjoy the satisfaction of sculpting a beautiful lawn and planting flowers and shrubs. However, if the proper safety precautions are not observed, your contented time in the yard could turn into catastrophe.

Letting Your Children Help With Lawn Care
Posted: Sep 26, 2007 |Comments: 0

Lawn care doesn’t need to be tedious and it can actually be something that the whole family can help with.
It can be a great activity involving the whole family when it comes to caring for your lawn. You can get your children to keep the lawn clean and it can help to teach them lessons about responsibility. As well as teaching them various lessons, it can also be a fun activity and it can also help to build up a good relationship with your kids at the same time.
A lot of the time the children will want to help their parents with the outdoor tasks and it can help to bring a sense of achievement when the lawn has finally been finished.
Involving Your Children in the Lawn Care
You may want to allocate certain tasks to your kids and to rotate them around in order to keep it more fun. That way it will make them want to help out again in the future. It can be tricky at times to get the whole family involved with the garden and the lawn duties; especially if you are always busy yourself. It is a good idea to get things organized and to assign each person their own duties so that they know exactly what they are doing. It is also a good idea to make a schedule that is easy to keep and which makes it easy for the kids to do as well.
One task that you may want to involve your kids in is when it comes to planting the grass for the lawn. You can get the children to help you to purchase the grass seeds. Then they can maybe help you to sow the seeds on the ground, which can make them feel good for helping out when it starts to grow. Also, by getting your children to help you out, it can help you to complete the task a lot faster as well so it does have some great benefits.
You will need to handle fertilizer with caution if you want to involve your children with this process; especially if the fertilizer has chemicals in it. If your children are not old enough, you may want to either do the task yourself or make sure that they have the right protective clothing and gloves.
You should keep younger children away from machinery such as lawnmowers and if you do let them they will need to be closely supervised to avoid getting seriously injured.
As you can see, when it comes to lawn care you can involve the whole family in certain tasks. So you may want to delegate little tasks to your children. This helps to make everyone feel involved and it also makes lighter work of the task ahead too. With hard work the results will really speak for themselves, as it could end up being a lawn that you can all be proud of.

Watering your Lawn is Important
In some areas, if you don’t water your lawn grass doesn’t grow. In others it may rain often enough that the lawn does fine for parts of the year, or even all year round. In most places, to keep a nice lush lawn from dying, you have to water it at least part of the year.

Starting Your Own Lawn Care Business
Posted: Sep 24, 2007 |Comments: 0
|
If you are looking to start up your own lawn care business, you will need to do a lot of research in order to make sure that it is possible for you to do it.
When it comes to starting your own business it can be an exciting time and it can bring financial and emotional freedom with it at the same time. If you are interested in providing a great lawn care service to clients and you know everything that there is to know about it, then this could be a great business for you. The good thing about this line of business is that there is a very high demand for great lawn care services. So if you can provide a high quality service then you could bring in a very profitable income from it.
Is a Lawn Care Business for You?
To determine whether this line of business is the best option for you then you should consider whether you actually enjoy doing lawn care yourself. If you really enjoy lawn care and you know about the things that can help it to grow properly as well as the certain conditions that can affect it, then you could do extremely well. If you just want to set up your own lawn care business for the money but you have no passion for the job, then there is a high chance that it will not be a successful business.
If this business is something that you are passionate about then it is certainly worth being given a lot of thought, but it is something that you cannot rush into. When it comes to small businesses, it is an extremely wise idea to enjoy what you are doing, otherwise you will not want to put your all into it and you will not be able to compete with any competition in the same field. Something that you may need to keep in mind is the fact that it can be irregular hours and it may include nights and weekends too.
Another thing to remember is that to start with you probably will have to do all of the work yourself and if in time your business has picked up, you may be in the position to hire staff to help you. You may need to keep your full time job whilst you are setting up your business, just to have something to full back on in case your business does not take off how you hoped it would.

Lawn Treatment
Bergen County
Fall lawn care, including winterizing your lawn, sets the stage for how your lawn will weather winter damage.
Test Your Soil
Samples should be gathered from two to three inches below the surface of the soil. Use a trowel or a spoon to collect the sample. Don’t touch it with your hands as residue from your body, particularly if you smoke, could alter the results.
Put each sample in a separate jar and label it according to where it came from. For home lawn soil testing, it is a good idea to take a sample from each corner of the lawn, as well as a sample from the center and another from any place that is very different from the rest of the lawn, such as a sunny spot or a place that doesn’t drain very well.
Try to get any debris such as rocks or roots out of the soil sample, again without touching the soil.
Most soil test kits will ask you to combine your soil sample with water and allow it to settle for a period of time before using it in the test kit. Always read and follow the directions for the kit you buy. If you are sending your samples out to be tested, gather and store your samples as requested.
Aerate Your Lawn
Aerating is usually either done with a Power Aerator (or Coring Machine) or a Manual (foot-pressed) Aerator. The Power Aerator kind of resembles a conventional motorized snow blower with the engine on top and wheels on the back or sides. The major difference is that the Power Aerator has a circular wheel in the front or back with hollow cylinders or spikes pointing out around the wheel. The manual version will often have around four hollow cylinders on the bottom with a foot plate on top for pressing into the soil, much like a shovel.
Fertilize
Fall fertilization is best because the lawn has passed through the stressful summer months and needs food to rebuild itself. During the fall season there is less competition from weeds, insects and diseases. Nutrients are required to take full advantage of the cool weather growth period to restore the lawn to full health and prepare it for the next summer.
Seed
The perfect time to start a new lawn is in the fall. In cold-weather climates, fall’s cooler temperatures prevent the seeds from drying out, but there’s still enough sun and rain to help them germinate before going into hibernation for the winter, without the competition of crabgrass and other weeds that die off this time of year.

4 Things You Should Know Before Starting A Lawn Care Business
Posted: Dec 01, 2010 |Comments: 0

Whether you are interested in a career change or earning a few extra hundreds dollars (part time) each month, a lawn care business is a very viable way to achieve your goal. The lawn care industry is considered a near recession-proof industry. Regardless of the economic conditions, millions of lawns in the residential and commercial sectors require various degrees of maintenance on a regular and on-going basis.
Before you take the plunge of starting your own lawn care business, here are a few basic requirements that you need to know first.
1. Better than average skills.
You have to be better than average in your basic lawn care skills such as mowing, trimming and pruning. You may want to consider attending some garden maintenance or advanced lawn care courses to upgrade your skills if necessary. You only have one chance to impress your potential customers that you are worth the money.
2. High degree of self-discipline
Self-discipline is an important trait for any entrepreneur. You will be faced with many distractions such as going to the beach on a nice summer day. You must be able to resist the temptation of heading off for some fun or work on other personal tasks before servicing your clients in any circumstances. Your reputation is everything. Do not put it at risk if you are in for the long haul.
3. Physically fit and healthy
Lawn care can be rigorous and thus you need to be physically fit. From time to time, you will have to lift heavy equipment on and off trailers or labor under the hot sun for a few hours. In short, you need to stay fit to stay in business.
4. Be business savvy
As a businessman, you have to learn how to administer cash flow, project planning, scheduling, and launching a marketing campaign. You also have to prospect for new businesses on a regular basis as well as handle customers’ complaint and inquiries. In addition, you have to put in survival plan for the winter months where the demand for lawn care is at its lowest. If you are a sole proprietor, then you will need to handle administration task such as tax filing, insurance and other financing matters.
While there are many challenges in starting your own business, the rewards can be even greater. Imagine working at your own pace and at any time during the regular daylight hours. Once your business starts to grown and you have a steady stream of monthly income, you can hire an assistant or two to help you. You can use the extra free time to prospect for more clients or take a we

Organic Gardening and Lawn Care
Posted: Dec 29, 2008 |Comments: 0

Most home owners take lot of pride in caring for their homes both inside and out, and try to make their home the best that it can be. Nice landscaping makes a person feel welcomed to the home.
Having the correct tools and lawn care products is essential to getting your garden and lawn looking its very best. Far too many people believe that the way to achieve this is through the use of pesticides and other chemicals to eliminate weeds and keep bugs under control. People do not realize that they can have a really beautiful lawn and garden using organic gardening methods, and they won’t be harming the environment in the process.
Fertilizers used on today’s lawns are full of chemicals the worst of these being nitrates and phosphates. Since it takes several pounds of fertilizer to treat one lawn, you are exposing your family and pets to a great deal of toxic products. Fertilizers are known to trigger asthma, are a known carcinogen, and cause neurological problems in young children and pets. Worse yet these chemicals get into the soil and into our drinking water supply.
So what can you do to make the switch to organic gardening? The first change you should make is to switch to using natural compost. Despite what people think, composting is not difficult. Simply purchasing a compost container where you dispose of food scraps, pet dropping, and your lawn and leaf litter is the first step. By its very nature, the amount of composting material generated, will be a lot less that the amount of material that you start out with. You want to save your materials all year long to make enough compost to serve your garden.
Having good soil will produce a much healthier and longer root system, which will in turn produce healthier plants and grass. Long roots require less water to keep it green. This will cut back on your water bill as well.
Many communities are under water restrictions, so having good soil and a good root system will allow you to have a lovely lawn and garden despite those water restrictions.
It is also important to know that watering should be done in the early morning hours to avoid loss of water to evaporation. Watering in the heat of the day will result in most of the water being evaporated before being used by the plants. Watering during the nighttime hours exposes your lawn to fungus.
Another way to preserve the water you use is by adding a layer of mulch over the top of the soil to reduce evaporation loss.
If you are the type that enjoys spending a lot of time on your lawn, use organic gardening methods. This will keep toxic chemicals from harming your family and pets.
The use of native plants is another good organic practice. To avoid disappointment, choose the proper plants and grass that grow in your area. Not all plants grow in all area, and may need extra water and care to survive.
There is a benefit to choosing native grass and giving at a good root system. Those lawns hold up much better to foot traffic and child’s play. You certainly wouldn’t want a lawn that everyone has to stay off in order for it to look nice.
Far too many individuals immediately reach for chemicals to kill off weeds. It is important to first find out what type of weed is growing to indentify the problem you are having. Overwatering may produce weeds that thrive in a wet environment. Simply cutting down on the amount of water you are using will eliminate the problem.
Some weeds can actually be beneficial to your lawn, and you may want to leave them alone. They can serve as a natural fertilizer for your yard. The rest of the weeds should be either pulled out by hand or to use tools to remove them. Just make sure you pull them from the roots up so they can’t re-grow as easily.
Many people just run weeds over with their lawnmowers. This is not a good idea as there are seeds in the weeds. Cutting them with the lawnmower will result in the weeds spreading all over the place. This will result in your having more weeds in more areas than when you began.
One final change you need to make before you go organic is to choose the proper lawn mower. A reel type mower puts no pollutants into the air and does not produce noise pollution. You also get the benefit of exercise using a reel lawn mower.
The next best choice is an electric mower. This type mower has improved over the years. They are now battery operated and do not require a long electric cord to operate. Last is the gas powered lawn mower. These are probably the most polluting device used by homeowners. One hour of using a lawn mower is equivalent to driving 1300 miles in an automobile. To truly go organic, ditch the gas lawn mower.

You must have spotted a lot of news articles expressing concerns on the harmful effects of chemicals on the environment, people and animals. But, if you desire for a green and lush lawn, you need to use chemicals in optimum quantity, isn’t it?
This necessity of a lush green environment actually gave birth to the concept of “Organic Lawn Care.” This kind of lawn care is more about using natural materials to improve the overall texture of the yard. Gardeners also need to realize better and improving ways to enhance the appearance of lawn and its surrounding area. So, if you try to learn how to keep the grass healthy and green, you would be providing everything that your garden requires.
Following areas of lawn care should be considered when organizing a natural lawn care:
Fertilizers
Weed Killers
Maintenance
Pest Control
Let’s elaborate these points in short:
Fertilizers
Conduct a soil test if your grass is not looking really good. Sometimes, you may need to start a new lawn once again. Visit the local nursery and get the plants of your choice. You should enquire about natural fertilizers and use them as instructed by an expert.
Weed Killers
These are a great alternative to toxic killers. The best combination will include vinegar with lemon juice.
Maintenance
In order to get a beautiful lawn, you need to take the required steps that will make a huge difference in your lawn. Cut the grass periodically and add manure to give them the needed diet.
Pest Control
Choose your pests well that usually do not harm the environment in particular. You can put things that attract the natural predators to your lawn as well.
By following the above stated factors, you can easily maintain a good and lush lawn.

How to Properly Water your Lawn
Jim Zamzow talks about how to properly water your lawn. Lawns in South West Idaho share a lot of qualities with other areas that have hard, compact clay soils. Watering your lawn properly will help ensure that you won’t get fungus, insects, or disease.
The only way to know if you are properly watering your lawn is to measure with a straight sided can. Place the cans in various parts of your lawn. Time your sprinklers to see how long it will take to collect a 1/2 inch of water in the can.

A well-maintained lawn looks beautiful and attracts attention at once. It is the place where people come out, lounge, play games, party, entertain, and spend a lot of time with family members and close friends.
